Posted July 16, 200816 yr Hi there, just as i was about to cover my aviary, i thought i might go and check that there was food and water in there. I noticed that one of my 11 budgies aprille was in a nesting box, sitting on an egg!!!!yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She has had two other clutches with her boyfriend Halo. After there second clutch, end of feb o8, this might sound weird but halo and aprille broke up. Halo went to his older daughter from , first clutch, and they have fallen in love. Just recently i had noticed aprille had a big bottom like she was pregnant, and kept on going in nesting box, she has an egg. I am thinking that either Oliver or Aprilles son Teala is the mate. Teala is the one you see in my signature, he was born in Late feb 08 so that makes him only about 4-5 months old. I thought how xan this be, hes only a baby himself. So here i am trying to think who, Oliver gets along with aprille, so does Teala. Teala stands on the perch outside the nesting box and sometimes feeds her. Oliver trys to follow aprille but tEALA just chases him away. Could aprille have just layed an egg coz she wanted to or would it be one of the marvelous, cheeky boys? Thanks
July 16, 200816 yr Brittany, you should never ever have budgies younger than 12 months in an aviary with nesting boxes. It encourages them to breed far too early. Just because they can make eggs and babies younger doesnt mean they will be good parents or be successful at it. You really need to rethink having nesting boxes in an avairy full of all ages of birds. You are in for some trouble.
July 16, 200816 yr Author Oh okay, My dad is making an extension to my aviry so there will be more room for breeding cages, i will be putting the older ones in there. Also My budgie aprille, when i got her she had just come out of the nest herself, from a different breeder. About a month later she had babies, then 2 months later again she had babies, The first time she would,ve only been about 5 months old, she had two georgeous budgies, next time she had 4 geoorgeous budgies, all the eggs hatches. Thanks alot anyways, ill try to do something, Thanks again
July 16, 200816 yr Kaz has offered you some excellent advice. Just because they can have young does not mean they should. Think of it with teenagers. A 13 year old's reproductive organs are fully operational. Does that mean they are okay to have kids? No one is out to put you down or have a go at you Brittany. We all struggle when we are starting out, however perhaps you can learn from this advice from this point onwards.
July 16, 200816 yr Sorry to have burst your bubble of excitement Brittany. Eggs can be exciting. But it seems the person who sold you the budgie has not given you good advice or a good example to go by. As Dave says its like a teenager having a baby. Also its up to us to stop them at two clutches or they will literally breed themselves to death. With budgies the fact that you have nesting boxes in an aviary gives them a reason to breed. Its kind of like saying to a 12 yr old child...here's the "pill" and now go and make babies. If you are going to colony breed which is full of problems, you need to watch them pretty much all day long in case of trouble. You need for there to only be birds of 12 months to 4 years breeding in there and not too many birds for the space that they have. Here is a good article http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/faqs/i...d%20vs%20colony Hope this helps.
July 22, 200816 yr Author Hi there, Aprille now has 4 eggs, every second day they have been layed, They have both been sitting on them, aprille sits on them at night, I go out there at about 9:30 every noght before i go to bed and shes on them. When i get back from school they are feeding each other and both going in the box and cramming together to keep the eggs warm

So our advice is that once your babies are feathered up and left the box you should remove the hen or the box whichever is easier otherwise they will just continue to lay.You can let her lay in the future but just give her a break. So good luck with your babies i hope they are happy and healthy.
July 26, 200816 yr Author hi there, Thanks for your advice, aprille now has 6 eggs. I will most probably remove aprille . Thanks
