Firstly so nice to be back. I had something happen to my computer and lost all my login info. I have only found this afternoon where I had written down my details.

I've ,missed you all

I was wondering if it is okay to burn a lemon essential oil in the house near a budgie ?

Thanks

It talks about in the fAQ section about household hazards and lists incense, popourri and scented candles to be harmful fumes for budgies so i would say that burning oils would be harmful as well.

Welcome Back,

Sorry But I have to disagree with you guys -

I love my candles and oils and I burn them every day - IN SAYING THAT - Mac isn't in the same room that these are being used - Oils are watered down so the scents are not at 100% - But Make sure that all flames are out and the oil burner is put away, before your birds have their free flight time :D

Welcome back :D

Personally i can not see harm in 100% pure natural oils such as, eucalyptus, rose and mint etc. I would steer clear of the cheap imitation oils though, and don't make them too strong. Cheap Oils, scented candles and pot purri give me instant headaches so i don't use them. The natural oils don't give me headaches so they are possibly less toxic than the imitation ones??

Here is something I have noticed, my mother in-law burns candles in every room and when I got Merlin back he had brown above his nostrils, I showed Kaz and she said it was most likely a respiratory irritation. I think it was from the candles, cleaners and air fresheners she uses (that I advised her NOT to use around him).

Now at my house he is in my office off the living room and in the kitchen I burn a paper wick soft wax candle everyday and I don't have any issues. He is also not in the same room.

When he is out make sure all candles are out, don't burn in the same room and if you see nasal discharge or irritation I suggest not using it. It is not that the fumes are natural or not but how strong they are and birds respiratory linings are so delicate that they can be irritated when ours are not.

Agree - When you think about how small their Widdle widdle lungs are compared to ours !

I recently went to a candle party (yes there is such a thing). They told us that the black that you get on your roof and walls when you burn candles is actually petrol :D I didn't know this, and was quite shocked, I had never really thought about where the black comes from to be honest. And to think that we breathe that in.

I know quite a few people that get headaches from candles, perhaps it is the nasty ingredients? :D

I use to heat gum oil and rose oil in hot water as I was told that there are less fumes. Harley was in the same room but the other end and never had an issue that I know of.

I never liked having open flames while he was around as he would get all said and depressed if my sister burnt a candle in the same room as him and it would take a few days to get back to his normal self so we stopped doing it, maybe candles gave him headaches? Err on the side of caution.

I have decided not to risk it. I couldn't stand it if something happened to him (actually a her,but that's another story lol)

Thanks for all the differing views though.

Your Welcome, Just remember to do what YOU feel comfortable doing :P

I have heard that the black is carbon the candles I burn don't have that issue which is nice.

It is always wise to take all the information as you have and make the best decision for your home. :P

Thanks again.

Yes the best decision for my home is not to risk killing my mate LOL :D

I think the main thing is with all this.....with candles and oils....you never really know the precise ingredients of them, regardless of what they claim to be. So in that regard you take a chance. Fresh air is always best when its all said and done. We have to make choices.

Yes Kaz,some of the sticks they burn,Would kill a brown dog. :D
