Posted July 15, 200817 yr Just wondering is there any reason for lifting cages off the ground other than keeping mice/rats out? I'm going to put my breeding cages in a fully rodent proof enclosure so do I still need to lift them up? The bottom cages is about 2 inches off the ground.
July 15, 200817 yr You will find that the Middle and the top cage will produce better - So i have been told .... Low to the ground birds don't feel safe
July 15, 200817 yr Author Hadn't thought of that, so maybe the bottom one is best used for birds which aren't to be bred straight away, while I'm putting condition on them, etc.
July 15, 200817 yr Everytime I have had a low cage when a bank of breeder cages was in place....the lower cages did not produce. There is less light down there and its colder. Waste of time trying. I most certainly would NOT have anything lower than a foot above ground level. I would rather stand on a step ladder to check higher breeding cages than have cages that low. Experience will show you that the low cages are not productive and the birds in them just arent happy. Light conditions in your birdroom and light to cages are vital for breeding. July 15, 200817 yr Author I was planning on having a warm light on each breeding cage, do you think that would make a difference?
July 15, 200817 yr I've had success in my low ones, but then again they're atleast 1ft off the ground and in natural light. I'd have to agree, you'll have alot of trouble, probably best to keep them as holding cages only if they have to be that low.
July 15, 200817 yr The guy we bought the cages off told me that I should use the bottom bank as holding cages and the next two as breeding cages. He knew that I would not be using the top ones as they are two tall for me. Also all the breeders I have spoken to or seen their set ups have them at least of foot off the ground unless they are holding cages.
July 16, 200817 yr You buy one of those stand on things from Bunnings or who ever & stand on thwm & then you can ure the top pens.

I have one Macka but due to a foot injury I stear clear of ladders as my balance sucks and I fall off But that is an option MB but I don't think your stand is as high as mine.
July 16, 200817 yr Heres a picture of our breeding cages havent used the bottom ones yet as didnt want to bend over
