Posted July 15, 200816 yr This is Darius, dom pied grey cock and Gracie yf grey spangle hen. They also have 2 eggs.
July 15, 200816 yr Yellow Face Greys are one of my favorite, they look like a pretty dark grey too, maybe double factor in there? Will be neat to see the colors of the chicks and the different shades of grey and if they have any blue chicks.
July 15, 200816 yr Author Thanks guys. My posts dont show my excitement so far, cause its my first really quality pairings and it makes me a little nervous to be quite honest. Its a tad different from throwing pet types all together in a colony situation and they just breed like happy little rabbits lol.
July 15, 200816 yr I am really anxious about cabinet breeding too. I have been doing lots and lots of thinking about it and i think the most important thing is to have a number of pairs breeding at the same time to make sure there are plenty of foster parents available if any problems were to arise.
July 15, 200816 yr Author I put 3 pairs down at the same time and 2 pair have eggs. The other pair seem interested, but nothing has happened yet. I will be putting one more pair down tomorrow.......and that is all the room I have at the moment! lol
August 3, 200816 yr Author Update: Well one egg was cracked about a week ago and I think Gracie tossed it, cause it went missing. One egg looks very dark, so I think it is DIS. The third egg I still have my fingers crossed for
August 3, 200816 yr Disapointing about egg one and two... but I have everything crossed for the lucky last one!
August 4, 200816 yr I hope you have luck with them, did they stop at only three? That’s a bit strange maybe it’s their first batch, anyway if those eggs fail hopefully they will go down again fast. The only thing I have found in the cabinets, especially I think with the show types is to watch carefully when the chicks leave the nest. I have had a few start chasing the chicks & had to remove them quick, some got picked in the head. Looks like a nice pair.
August 4, 200816 yr Author Thanks for the advice. Yes they only had 3, but I think it is their first clutch. I had heard about the parents chasing chicks in cabinets, I will watch for that.
September 4, 200816 yr Author Update: Well Darius and Gracies first clutch was a dud. She threw all her eggs out in the end, but they went down for a second clutch. She lays really big eggs! This clutch she has 4 eggs and this time she has a baby!!! I dont even care if none of the others hatch, if they can just bring up one baby I will be happy It was only hatched today, so I am still anxious about it's survival. I think you were right Norm, I think that was her first ever clutch. Fingers crossed for more babies
September 5, 200816 yr Author Thanks Elly and Kaz Baby #2 today Baby 1 is being fed and mum has turned into a yeller since babies have hatched lol. She is a good girl and knows to pop out when I knock, but she has taken to yelling at me in protest, even though she still dutifully leaves the box for me to look at her babies lol
September 6, 200816 yr hello sunny. Your pair is beautiful i wouldn't mind having them in my aviary. The cock looks to be a spangle dominant pied they are really good birds to have as they can produce spangles and dominant pieds so its a bonus. i myself have a spangle dominant pied hope the rest hatch for you as they will be big babies. regards Joel Edited September 6, 200816 yr by **Liv** Grammar
September 6, 200816 yr Sorry about your first clutch Sunnie, but I'm glad all is going well with their second. I hope the bubs do well
September 6, 200816 yr I'm glad to hear things are going better this time Sunnie...best of luck with them.
September 22, 200816 yr Author Grace and Darius's babies are doing well. He eats food like I've never seen a budgie put it away before to feed his babies and she is a super protective mum, bouncing out of the box when I knock to look in, but coming back in sometimes when Im still handling babies and grabbing hold of my finger!! I suspect I have 3 grey spangle babies, one has a yellow face. The thing that confuses me though, is that none of them look dom pied to me
