Settling In

Hi everybody, just a quick question, how long should it take for my girls to settle in. They are in quarantine at the moment ( which i have never done before), in my spare bedroom there is plenty of light and fresh air and they have some toys but all they seem to do is sit there, very little noise, the odd chirp here and there. they are eating and drinking and they all look healthy, the rest of my birds carry on like pork chops and are never still for long.

Thanks

Charlie

PS here is a picture of their cage

pps can you believe it as i go into take the phote Penny and Jordan have finally decided to come out and explore(Penny was only out yesterday cause she escaped while i tried to take pics of her)

Give them a few days to a week, that is a big cage to get use to and also an even bigger room. so it might be very scarey for them. I am sure they will come around with time. Also how old are they? I find my older ones carry on more then my younger ones.

i thought that might be the case i have only had them since saturday. penny is 4 and the others are about 1 i think( their bands are from last year) They are club birds so i was thinking that maybe they are not used to toys and people

Give them a good week. Also I find my older birds and brids from breeders have no clue what toys are and are really freaked out by them.

Elly once said something alone the lines of we have to think of them as wild animals not domestic ones.

A new puppy will look to you for comfort and support a new bird will see you as a preditor. Keep going with them, give them time and space and also find out their fav treat this will help alot in the process.

More familiar they are with their environment the more settled they will be , Totally agree, give them some more time!!!

Very nice set up :o

I have recently ordered the playgym sitting in the bottom of your cage and it actually has a copper bell. This is toxic and should be removed :D

Yes, it is a real worry how they do this sort of thing ^_^

I did read that that birds have never been domesticated so they go right back to their wild roots unlike your typical dog and cat. That is a wonderful cage the same thing I have and I suggest to make them feel safer to put a sheet across the back so they don't feel open back there it will help them out greatly.

Pretty didn't make a peep for almost 4 months he was very quiet and a male. You have hens they tend to be quieter then your male budgies so don't expect them to be too loud that is the nice thing about them. I believe that within a month you will find that they will settle in nicely. Since they are older birds work with them with your voice and not your hands, put your face up to the cage and offer a bit of millet or put the millet there and walk away. You will need to use the food route and patience with these ladies but they will come around.

Read my taming tips in the FAQ's, it goes through how I tamed Pretty who was a 3 month old pet shop budgie with no human interaction.

Keep us updated and ask question but lastly dont' give up.

Your new birds are clubrung show types. They are a very different type to pet types. Their very nature is quieter and less active and playful than pet types. Most of them havent seen or played with toys if from a show breeder. The only thing my show types seems to enjoy is swings.

Also, if they have come from larger flights ( aviary ) then cage life is restrictive to them and would quieten them down.

I curently have my new show types in quarantine also and in cages as compared to the large aviary they came from. They too sit quietly on perches and do little. They are used to much larger flying spaces than I can put them in right now.
