Posted July 15, 200816 yr So I stop at this pet shop on the way to work BIG sign "Free tamed baby budgie when you purchase cage". GRRRRRR I go in and ask to speak to the manager (I am in a grumpy mood today so this just annoyed me) I explained to the guy (who looked about 12) that this was wrong and that they should not sell the Budgies as free with a cage. We had words and he finally walked off. So I was a little annoyed and then I spot the girl crop feeding the "tame baby budgies" So I go and ask her if they can feed themselves and she tells me no they can't but not to worry cause they give all new owners a lesson on how to crop feed these poor little guys... just wait I thought it was illegal to sell a bird that young? So Now I am fuming, I get back in my car and call and leave messages with the RSPCA, i call the cops cause I am so mad but I don't think anything will happen. So I get to work and when onto a few forums that I check while I wait on hold and there is this guy in the states telling everyone how great it is cause his local pet shop is selling... you guessed it free with cage budgies! Everyone is telling him how it is a great deal.... GRRRRRR I post a response and then the mods come at me and tell me to edit it or be banned so I toned it down but really GRRRRRR Now I am really annoyed and well just venting
July 15, 200816 yr This is terrible and I know in the US it is illegal to sell babies that are not weaned. I am not sure if the extends to where you are but this is information by us http://www.avianwelfare.org/issues/homelessness.htm
July 15, 200816 yr OMG!!! They were crop feeding I am not even confident enough to do that - what if they do it wrong!!! - thoes poor babies :hap:
July 15, 200816 yr Author This is terrible and I know in the US it is illegal to sell babies that are not weaned. I am not sure if the extends to where you are but this is information by us http://www.avianwelfare.org/issues/homelessness.htm Yes it is illegal to seel parrots that are not weaned... got a call back from the cop and he asked me "Are they parrots?" when I said yes they are Budgies he asks are Budgies Parrots? Huh never knew that! GRRRRR Not his fault but he did say that he would check it out. OMG!!! They were crop feeding I am not even confident enough to do that - what if they do it wrong!!! - thoes poor babies :hap: Yeah I know how to do it and hope that I never have to do it ask I would not be confident enough to do it as well. I wanted to buy all the babies just to save them but that would not help the matter. Hopefully the RSPCA will take them off the pet store.
July 15, 200816 yr YOU GO GIRLFRIEND - So i wonder what the cops said - Ohhhhh Go back to that shop this arvo and see what happened and if they are still doing that !!!! - I didn't know about the weaning thing But I never sell a bird that can't feed it self anyway !!
July 15, 200816 yr Crop feeding for an untrained person with their first baby budgie and no support system like this forum would mean death to the baby budgie. Very easy for a newbie to puncture the trachea or oesophagus. Who is the idiot that sold them that age to the pet shop in the first place ?! And the pet shop are negligent in taking them at that age. Survival rate selling unweaned babies to new budgie owners would be dismal at best. One in ten survive maybe ? Never mind the EXTRAS the petshop would be selling...crop- needles, meds etc. AND I would hazard a guess the cage isnt right either.
July 15, 200816 yr Author Kaz I am so with you on that. One of the other reasons that I could not justify taking them all was that how am I suppose to do that and I am sure that I would end up killing a few Also the cage was not bad, not great okay for one Budgie if they got out of the cage time but even then a little on the small side. Am going to go back past on my way home and see what they are up to.
July 15, 200816 yr You are not having a good trot lately AV. Good on you for doing all you can for those poor little budgies.
July 15, 200816 yr That is just so awful The poor inocent birds. I really can't believe that somebody would do that, hand over their babies knowing that chances are, they wont survive. Now I am all worked up Good on you for doing something about it

July 15, 200816 yr Legally they must be fully fledged(able to fly) and feeding by themselves. In the case of flightless birds they must be atleast four weeks of age. DSE guidelines for licensed wildlife. I believe unlicensed birds can be sold at any age for handrearing however this pet shop is arguably being negligent by selling unweaned birds to inexperienced people.
July 15, 200816 yr Author Parrots need to be weaned... I know this cause on the way home I stopped and the RSPCA was there. Most of these guys where tiny tiny tiny little bush budgies and no one could give details of there they came from .... :bluebudgie: They organised for a wildlife carer to come and take them away they will be rasied and released as everyone involved including me after talking to the cop believes they may have been taken from the wild as no one could find the breeders details. All in all a good result I think, i am feeling good about it!
July 15, 200816 yr Author released :bluebudgie: ???But would they survive.... they are raised and then if they believe they will be able to survive they will be released. As they are bush budgies the carer who was there was talking to me about it. They will be put into a cage with a foster mum and if she feeds them then great if not they will be hand feed, once that happens they will look at moving them to a re hab centre if they are demmed suitable for release they will either go to a zoo aviary or a suitable area will be found to release them in. it's not uncommon for bush budgies to be taken / trapped in the wild and brought down to melbourne to be sold. there is a trade in it as people think the little guys are so cute. because they are the tradtional native (not mutations) then they should be fine to go back. Here is hoping they can now all live a long and happy life.
July 15, 200816 yr Sounds Good I hope the little guys have a wonderful bright future now thanks to your input - Well done :bluebudgie:
July 15, 200816 yr Glad you took action and so did the RSPCA!!! Good to hear the outcome was positive and they did something.
July 15, 200816 yr Author I am a little shocked the outcome was so good but glad because it means that I think people who complain to organisations are getting the message out there. I am starting to feel like I can make a difference!
August 25, 200816 yr That's a great outcome. I'm surprised (in a good way) that the RSPCA took it so seriously! Can someone tell me how to recognise a bush budgie? I know they're green and have no mutations but how would someone tell the difference between a bush budgie and a regular green budgie that was bred in captivity?
August 25, 200816 yr A bush budgie is tiny, if you think of how much smaller a pet type is than a show bird a bush budgie is that much smaller again than a pet type.
August 25, 200816 yr A bit bigger than a sparrow, but yes very tiny :hap: I have a pair of bush budgies(captive bred ones though) so I will try and get a photo to compare for you
