Posted March 4, 200520 yr I have got 7 Budgies. i have worked out one couple but another female has laid eggs. I have moved her and her nestbox into another cage as her last to eggs got destroyed. But we couldn't work out who the partner was. there seemed to be no males which she would allow near her or the nestbox which is in total contrast to the identified couple that seem inseperable. will this female be able to do everything herself or does there have to be a male in the cage with her. What should we do?
March 4, 200520 yr The hen needs help during the sitting period. When she is committed to the eggs she will only come out for a few seconds a day during which she will: - make an ENORMOUS poop - get fed very rapidly by the **** who regurgitates like crazy to her - often while she poops. Without this support she will have a tough time staying fed. Later she needs this support so she can go back into the nest and re-re-gurgitate to the chicks. Later again - she leaves the nest and lets the male feed the chicks till they are fledged. -------------------- It is NOT uncommon for a hen to detroy her first clutch if she decides they are infertile and to then go on and have a second successful clutch. This might have happened here. -------------------- Sounds like you are damned if you do and damned if you don't but I would leave the nest IN the cage so she gets supported and it will eventually let you figure out who is the father. If the eggs get destroyed a second time - well some do this. Withdraw the nesting box so she doesn't waste her time and energy -------------------
