Hi everyone, I have a budgie not long ago with a dark blue ring, does anyone know what year that is?

Charlie

Although the 2004 rings are more a royal or brighter blue- is it a club ring?

I guess so, how can you tell? i also got some more hens today with green rings, do you know what year that is?

You can always check yourself as it actually says the year on the ring. There will be two numbersor a symbol then a number which are at right angles to the rest of the writing. This is the year (eg. diamond 7 +2007 or 99 + 1999)

Breeders rings in Australia have a 6 year cycle.

2001 - Green

2002 - Black

2003 - Red

2004 - Blue

2005 - Purple

2006 - Gold

2007 - Green

2008 - Black

I checked all the bands on my birds that have them, all start with SA then 4 have a triangle and a 7 at right angles followed by a 4digit number, they are all green so I am guessing they are all from last year, do you think it will be okay to breed them this year? the other 2 have blue bands with SA -4 then a four digit number so i am guessing they are from 2004 which will be fine for the cock but what about the hen?

Thanks

Charlie

Unless you know whether they were early or late 07 birds you would be best to atleast wait a couple of months to increase the likelihood that they are atleast a year old. If you want to breed your 04 hen you could try her this year but she's really at her limit, I have an 04 hen I plan to breed this year and then not again.

Optimum breeding age for a hen is between 1-4 years. There are exceptions, and/or ones that will never be any good at breeding.

The show type hens often need to be around 18 months before they are mature enough to raise chicks properly - it really just depends on the hen and her attitude.

With your 04 hens, again it depends on the breeding quality of the hen and how they have bred in the past. Last year, before i knew better, I bred my "super mum" who was 7 years old. She never had any problems and has been the best mum in my flock so far - she is now retired and being chatted up by her son :D
