Posted July 10, 200816 yr I thought she had finished laying but yeaterday one of the eggs hatched, and today she has laid another egg. So now she has 10 eggs and 1 baby. Have not candelled them to see if they are all fertile. But is this normal? I was quite suprised when I saw the extra egg there today, and had to double check that it was not the shell from the baby, but no, she just keeps laying. There is no problem- I'm just worried about her being able to cope if they all hatch. What do you think?
July 10, 200816 yr Wow! You will need to foster some of those babies out or be ready to hand raise the older ones as she starts to get too many. If she does manage to hatch them all the oldest will be about three weeks old when the you gest hatches and you shouldn't have any trouble taking on those older ones I think If you do want them all to hatch you will have to make sure the box stays VERY clean, often onc the older ones start to poop lots the eggs get dirty and the unhatched ones die.
July 10, 200816 yr That's a lot of eggs I normally get around 5-7 eggs per clutch, so to have 11 - WOW!! Do you have any other pairs that could foster chicks if there ends up being too many for her to cope with. Also the later eggs she laid will probably get covered in poop and not hatch anyway - you can foster the eggs to another pair (if you have one) to reduce the number of eggs that diefrom being covered in poop.
July 10, 200816 yr Author Once more start hatching I have a hen who is already foster parenting a chick so she will happily have a few. My 4 year who owns the pair with the 10 eggs is very excited!!! Will candle the eggs tonight.
July 10, 200816 yr You may not have a big problem once you candle the eggs and see whats what. The latest egg laid wont show up as fertile yet though
July 10, 200816 yr If they candle as fertile I would foster them across very soon after they hatch so that the younger eggs stay clean.
July 10, 200816 yr Author Well- just candled and all except two look fertile, and I'm gussing that they probably will be just too early to tell. Will foster some a few days after they hatch..
July 10, 200816 yr WOW!!! That is alot for one little budgie, even if she was BUDGIEWOMAN. I agree with the fostering ..... Edited July 10, 200816 yr by Neat
July 30, 200816 yr Author So an update on my super mum- she has had 8 hatch so far-4 have been fostered and one has died. There are still 4 eggs left that are fertile and should hatch soon. Here she is with her babys...
