Posted July 10, 200816 yr Hello I am looking at buying a playgym but am having a bit of trouble chosing one that is going to be safe. Penn Plax (a US brand I think) have one but it doesn't say anywhere on the net or on the box whether non-toxic dyes are used. It also comes with a copper bell, and I don't know whether copper is safe. I know that I should probably not be so lazy and build one myself.... Do any members know of any playgyms that are safe and able to be shipped to Oz? I am only after one about 30cm square. Any help would be much appreciated
July 10, 200816 yr I would think any that are manufactured for birds would be fine. They would have to be pretty stoopid to use something toxic.
July 10, 200816 yr Gotta Love EBAY (i used id's because my ebay links keep coming back with an error ) there is This 380043791455 Or this 120281160287 Also I have seen them in Big W stores. I ended up making my own because mine needed to be big enough for 5 birds to play on with no fighting

July 10, 200816 yr They are so cute - They look like mini playgrounds I have seen ones similar to those (with the nice colours too) in Big W...
July 10, 200816 yr Author They are so cute - They look like mini playgrounds I have seen ones similar to those (with the nice colours too) in Big W... Then guess where I am going tonight hehehe I just emailed my bf asking if we can stop off at big w on the way home from work, now I will have to bribe him with a game or something though
July 10, 200816 yr We did buy one from Big W and I modified it a bit but thin I got adventerous and I have made 3 playgyms, one for myself first and then one for my step son, and one for my daughter which incorpirated a small part of a barbie doll castle for her bedroom. She had fun building the swings and toys for her bird... They are pretty easy and you can add whatever you like.
July 10, 200816 yr It depends on what you want from a play gym, There are heaps of designs out there!! At the moment Big W have some for $24.95 They are coloured and have a swing on them ... If you feel creative why not make one
July 10, 200816 yr Author Thanks for all of the help. I went to big w tonight, but they were too big for what I was after. I am thinking of going with the Pen-Plax one. Not bad, it gets sent from Brisbane, and inc postage is only $25. Does anybody know whether Copper is safe for birds ? It has a copper bell.
July 11, 200816 yr Copper is toxic!! --- Smack to the company who puts copper on bird toys!!!! Just take off the bell and put a Stainless Steele one on instead

Just take off the bell and put a Stainless Steele one on instead That is what I thought, I can't belive that they would be so silly I will replace it when I receive it. It makes me a little worried now. If they were dumb enough to use a copper bell what else could be wrong with it
July 11, 200816 yr Author are you sure it is copper and not brass?? they look very similar The box says Copper I will just take it off to be safe
July 11, 200816 yr I have found a few places are still sell products that have copper bells! My locak produce store sells them, Until I advised him that they aren't good for the birds as it is toxic to them. Unless you want to be sued my a customer if something happens don't purchase these anymore, He is wrapped around my little pinkie LOL

They seem to be quite a big bird product manufacturer. They even advertise on the box that it has a copper bell, like it is a key feature of the play gym :hap:
July 11, 200816 yr Copper is a heavy (and toxic) metal - most people know that..... I think they are either genuinely dumb or are just trying to make a buck because copper is cheaper that stainless steel ( i think)

July 12, 200816 yr Author Interestingly, I received a reply to an email that I sent to Pen-Plax regarding the materials used for their playgym: "Thank you for contacting Penn Plax consumer service in regards to this item, the activity center is dyed with food coloring and it is made with stainless steel." So they use safe dyes and stainless steel, but use a copper bell
