Got a free breeding cabinet off of and ex breeder that was very dirty!!!!! Spent about 4 hourss cleaning six cages. Later that day a visited a local breeder and picked up two breeding pairs of pet budgies and 3 english budgies to make pairs with my budgies. This was all yesterday. Well one of the breeding pairs are already going in the nest box. Keep you informed of any other events.

 

P.S If they are both going into the nest box how long till the eggs are laid?

Dave is right. I didnt think of that. If the pairs you have put together are from the breeders aviary thats fine, but dont mix them with yours until they have been quarantined for minimum 30 days at least 5 metres away from your other birds :bluebudgie:

Sounds like you have had a busy weekend

Quarantine is very important as an outbreak of a nasty bug could wipe out your entire flock

I have not put any of his birds with mine yet but i was only going to quarantine them for 2 weeks but luckily they are 5 metres away so thanks guysoh yer and i was looking at this site http://www.budgieplace.com/breeding.html and it says that a iodine salt spool is recommended. well i was just wondering if any1 new what this does and if anyone uses this when breeding..Thanks

Two weeks isnt enough especially if breeding. Breeding is stress conditions and stress brings out hidden illnesses. Best to do full quarantine before breeding. Stress is brought on by

being caught

being moved

new home

new food

new "friends" and

breeding

 

Stress equals illness.

So its best to take care and do all the right things.

 

Re the advice with iodine salt spool ?? No, but iodine is an important part of a budgies diet and can be given in iodine and calcium blocks.

Have you got picture of your new set up and pairs? Would love to see them

Nice cabinets BUT you need to get them raised up off the floor all you will have mice and rat problems and dead birds from getting sick from mice going through their cages.

Great minds....I was about to write that exact same thing.

 

With the money you saved, go to Bunnings and buy some of those sehlves you assemble yourself. get the ones that can be one big shelf or two halves. Use that to lift the cabinets off the ground

All is fine...it takes time. She knows it there and ready for her now. Next step is the pair get interested in each other and make eggs. One week to two weeks to first egg if all goes well

kool thanks the other pair isnt interested in the nest box but i bought it off a breeder and they had just raised a clutch for him so i will try them again in a couple of months

Well I am soo excited because when I did my daily check of the cages and nest boxes there was an egg in the pet types nest box

 

My first ever egg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wasnt expecting the first egg for a couple of days because it had only been exactly 7 days since I put them in the breeding cages

UPDATE

 

Well the pair that had the egg are now on three and i am expecting another one tomorrow.

 

I am expecting eggs soon from the other two pairs that are in the breeding cages at the moment

I'm so excited for you!! Although you must be very thrilled, try not to check them/bother them too much. Twice a day is enough. It is very hard, I know I look forward to regular egg and then baby updates!

Yes i only check them twice a day maximum and change seed and water etc aswell
