Posted July 6, 200816 yr I went to the aviary this afternoon and found 4 budgies with blood on them. One of my hens had blood around her beck and she has attacked 3 of my males in the aviary. i have never had fighting in my aviary before. She is a show type who is 18 months old and is in breeding condition. 2 of the males i cleaned up and left in the aviary but she attacked jake who is 7 years old and has a young hen who he is always with so i do not know why she hurt him. Jake is in a bad way so i have had to bring him inside to a hospital cage. i have removed the hen from the aviary but i thought it was the males that fight, why would the hen decide to attack the males?
July 6, 200816 yr Do you have nesting boxes in the aviary ? Hens fight more often than males do. Could have started with a male trying to mount her and she wasnt having any of that :bluebudgie:
July 6, 200816 yr Sorry to hear about the fighting. When I read this post's title, I thought - NO, Laverne!!!!!!!! Slight relief, but still not good

July 6, 200816 yr Seperate her for a couple of weeks till things settle down again....if you can :bluebudgie:
July 6, 200816 yr Author Thanks Kaz, i have enough spare cages to put her by herself. Fighting birds was just what i needed to top of the last couple of weeks i have had with the breeding problems. Also do budgies beck's grow back, Jack has lost one side of his top beck in the fight. he is still eating and drinking which is good.
July 6, 200816 yr Author It is not bleeding but i can see inside his mouth through the side. I am concerned that the stress of the attack might kill him, he is shaking and sleeping but he is still sitting on a perch in his hospital cage which is a good sign i hope.
