Sky Update And ? About Crop

okay so her vent is 100 times better and she seems better in herself.

She is still doing the strange tail bobbing thing but I don't think it is linked to her breathing as it seems random.

However her crop is now worrying me.

Hopefully you get the idea from the picture but it is larger then any of my other guys.

When I rub it betwen my fingers I can feel what appears to be seed in it but maybe it's grit that has not cleared??

Any suggestions or do you think it should be like that?

It could be just saggy (heading south poor girl :hap: ). I have a hen when she is feeding chicks gets a saggy crop - she is completely fine and when she is not feeding chicks her crop is normal.... :)

See I was thinking that, maybe she had chicks or something and just has a case of the saggyness.. I was advised to withhold food for a few hours to see if it emptys which it seemed to as I can't feel as much seed in it but still sits out like that. Hmmmmm

Perhaps she has swollen air sacks...?

I lost a chick a few weeks ago who kept blowing his up do to some valve or something that kept letting air seep in...

We thought it was his crop being blown up until it started to puff under his chin and other places where crops do not reach...?

No idea... before we contacted a vet about the little one when we realised that the crop needle couldn't actually get to the spot where the air was was I didn't even know they had air sacks...

Perhaps an avian vet can source out the answer to that one. From my understanding there is something they can do to fix it as she told us with this bub, but mine was not old enough yet. Yours should be able to be fixed if that's the cause :P

I Seen a cock with the same problem today no where as bad as that though I will ring the guy to find out what it is

Thanks Neat, I am really starting to feel like this Budgie could cost me $100s in vet bills... oh wait she has cost me over $200 so far and she is not even mine. As good as it feels to see her getting better I am starting to feel like she is a lost cause...

One thing that I didn't see acknowledged was the grit, I know it is contreversial but from what I understand grit is not necessary since budgies do hull their seeds vs the bigger parrots that don't. They have shown that it can cause more impaction then be helpful but then there are others that believe in it for digestion.

I agree none of my guys get grit outside of sometime calcuim bells and perches claim they contain grit. I found out that the pervious person to have her gave her girt and it made up at least 50% of her diet. That is why i am worried that it might be grit that is stuck in her crop however both the vets she has seen told me that you can feel the seed and grit is normally larger and more painful for the bird to rub between your fingers. She does not seem to mind me doing it so I am thinking it might not be but worried that it is... does that make sense :)

It does not seem to be bothering her, she is eating and drinking well, she had some time out in the garden today in the sun and LOVED it was giving herself a really good preen and also took a bath. So I feel she is getting better and I am not going to run to the vet again until her check up but the crop positioning does worry me.

Hey spoke to the guy and he mentioned something about a non maligment tumour (sp )

that is a common place where fatty tumors can be, Neat is right but I wouldn't jump to that conclusion just yet. How is she doing today?

She seems fine, is eating well and really happy so I think I will just let it ride untill her follow up visit with the vet unless it starts to worry her.
