Posted July 2, 200816 yr HI I'm just very consurned about my Budgie Bailey for some reason he's pulled his flight feathers out on one wing Why has he done this? first I let him out of his cage to play and he didnt fly straight and i thought he broke his wing, but he lifted it up and I saw it had only 1 flight feather left and he was flapping like mad to get it off. well that about it now hes getting special TLC from us Also how long will it till they grow back? if you want pictures ill get some but hes having some alone time
July 2, 200816 yr Hmmm.... There could be a number of reasons/things ....... Can you post a picture of him .... The ends of the feathers that he pulled out and his cage set up ... When feathers are lost they are usually replaced during the next molt

July 2, 200816 yr I think it’s very difficult to say why, maybe they just fell out for some reason, you would think that if he pulled them out there would be some damage on them & that doesn’t seem to be the case. They say that some pull some of their feathers because of boredom. I have seen some birds with no feathers in one wing like that, but usually they were birds that had had a virus called French Moult & this only occurs when they are very young & have just left the nest, but he is already an adult. If there’s no underlying problem when feathers are pulled out completely like that they should grow back in a couple of weeks.
July 3, 200816 yr very odd, I agree with Norm on what he said. budgies are not known to be feather pluckers usually just the bigger birds, I would keep an eye maybe a molt? Be careful when you let him fly he will not fly straight but to the side so I would watch out for that too.
July 3, 200816 yr If he is nearly due for a moult anyway I would suggest clipping his other wing so that he isn't lops sided, that way he should get both his wings back at the same time.

July 3, 200816 yr Once they are lopsided like that when they fly I think it hurts them a bit so then they keep picking at it to try & stop the pain. Maybe keep him in his small cage for a while & don't let him out so that he tries to fly.
July 3, 200816 yr Just pull the feathers out of the other side,Looking at those feathers, they were due to come out.I you cut the the side they fellout of will grow back & the cut side wont till they fall out.
July 3, 200816 yr Author Do I take Sky out because I dont have an extra cage now I put my hamster In it?
July 3, 200816 yr I don’t think you need to take Sky out if she is in the same cage. If she isn’t attacking him in any way.
