Posted July 2, 200816 yr I recently purchased a show budgie which is absolutley beautiful It is a yf sky blue but the yellow and blue have blended to make an aqua colour & it has the biggest violet patches i have ever seen!It has the most potencial out of all of my budgies and all it does is sits on the bottom of the cage.....constantly!! I had it in the cabinets with a few different birds but it just was not interested and would sit on the floor of the cage. So i moved it into my flight aviary and now its just sitting on the floor in there aswell there is nothing visibly wrong with it - its wings are fine???? I dont get it is there anything else that i could be mising? I have had him for around 3 months now so its not a sickness or anything?
July 2, 200816 yr Check its feet and legs. Some show birds are unable to fly too and thats why they are culled. But just sitting sounds like a not well or not quite happy bird. Can you post some pictures ? Also sounds like you have a YF skyviolet....the prettiest of birds. Here is Mimi...a YF sky violet spangle
July 2, 200816 yr I have a pet type similiar to that Kaz but he doesn't have proper black spangles so he has aqua blue ones instead I call him blondie :hap: I have found that a few of my show types that are too heavy and fluffy have trouble flying and spend a lto of time sitting down low in the aviary, I put walkways for them to climb up. You could try putting a branch down to the ground and seeing if she perks up once she can get up with the other birds.

July 2, 200816 yr Author I know its not the best photo in the world but its all i could do he might not be able to fly BUT HE CAN RUN!!!! Sorry its blurry his head is quite boofy i think hes great (not as good as yours though kaz he/she is beauty!)
July 2, 200816 yr As others have said some of the heavier show types seem to have difficulty in flying, maybe because of their weight or their feather quality. You would have to breed him in a cabinet & I would recommend mating to a hen that can fly real well.
July 2, 200816 yr Author I had him in a cabinet for around 5 weeks and he did not seem interested at all in the hen so i put him in the flight aviary hopefully when i put him back in the cabinet in about 2 weeks with a new hen he will get into it more? So if he is a violet what should i pair him with to get some true violets? Do you think i would need to pluck him or is it just the hen you do that to?
July 2, 200816 yr Being a skyblue you would need to pair him with a darker bird carrying violet as the chicks would need to be cobalt to be visual violets. A cobalt will give you about half cobalt chicks(and therefore potentialy half violets) or a mauve would give you all cobalt chicks.
July 2, 200816 yr To help with this guys feet issues .... and perching get THICK if not Flat perch for him. Get Mick, to make it about 15 - 30 cm off the ground that way he isn't going to get a cold chill from the cement/pavers...

He looks completley normal and he doesnt seem too big he just is either lazy or stupid i figure?
July 3, 200816 yr Some showbirds do not fly. I have two in my aviary that are floor dwellers. I bought them before I realsied they didnt fly and I have no idea why. They have all their feathers.
July 3, 200816 yr I have a pet type budgie who can not fly. I didn't know at the time i bought him as he was in one of those little cages with lots of other birds and he looks completely fine too. But when i got him home i realized he couldn't fly. I think he had a broken wing at some point before i got him and it healed wrong so he cant flap that wing properly. I made him a large ladder that gets him off the ground and on to the lowest perch in my aviary, then he climbs up the wire to sit with the other birds
July 3, 200816 yr Author So have you had any luck with breeding these birds in cabinets? When he was in the cabinet he could sit on the perch fine but just didnt seem interested so should i move the perches closer together or something?
July 3, 200816 yr So have you had any luck with breeding these birds in cabinets? When he was in the cabinet he could sit on the perch fine but just didnt seem interested so should i move the perches closer together or something? If it was a hen it wouldnt be an issue. BUTbecause its cock bird and must mount the hen and use its wings for balance for the mating act....his wings have to be strong and usable. If he has an issue with strength of wings so he cannot fly, he may be no good at trying to mate with the hen and stay aboard long enough to complete the mating act.
July 3, 200816 yr Author OH BUGGER!! I had high hopes for his babies! Oh well i might give him another go after he has a little break if nothing happens i will put him back in the avairy and have to make some adjustments to it.
July 3, 200816 yr I wouldn’t give up on him too soon, if he’s a nice looking bird, sometimes they take awhile to get in the mood. I’ve had some birds that looked like they would never breed but later on they were keen. But like I said if it was me I would try pairing it with a bird that doesn’t have the same problem other wise if he does breed he may produce non-flyers like himself.

Thanks for giving me some hope norm! I have never seen a bird like this? I wil find a nice healthy bird for him to 'help' the process! Should i move the perches closer together or put more in to help him balance do you think?
July 3, 200816 yr Some will climb up the wire others just seem happy to stay on the ground. I don't think they will have trouble in a cabinet. I had a show type cock that I bought over a year ago, I tried him with a couple of hens he didn’t seem very interested & all the eggs were infertile, so I had just left him in the aviary. I had just about given up on him when he went crazy over this young hen, they haven’t bred yet, but I will let him breed with her & hopefully I might get fertile eggs as he is chasing her like mad & mating with her, whereas he didn’t care about any others. He can fly, but maybe yours just hasn’t met the right girl yet, some will mate with anything others seem very picky.
July 3, 200816 yr Harley does not fly, use to but then had a scare loss all his feathers now he just flaps alot!
