Posted June 27, 200817 yr Can anyone tell me if they do anything special when a young (over 12 months) cock bird does not fill eggs? A special tonic perhaps? Special treatment?
June 27, 200817 yr Show breeders would put him on a course of Doxy. But you would have thought of that already. Whats current his diet and any supplements ?
June 27, 200817 yr Author Show breeders would put him on a course of Doxy. But you would have thought of that already. Whats current his diet and any supplements ? I put all the birds on a 40 day treatment of doxy/psittavet over the summer as per Gary A's advice. What exactly IS the course of treatment you're referring to? As for diet and supplements: Special breeder seed, 3 times/week fresh broccoli, every day fresh soft food (carrots, apple & boiled eggs base). Water changes on alternate days - 2 days Calcivet & Soluvet, 2 days Calcivet, 2 days Calcivet & Tracemin ... Iodine blocks in cabinets. Edited June 27, 200817 yr by renee

Actually I was going to try and get some doxy tomorrow at the auction, will it be available on the Accesories Table? June 27, 200817 yr Watch him in the cabinet , He may be clumsy and falls off , pluck his vent feathers , Change hens , I have also found some cock birds get a little fat in the vent area and this causes clear eggs , If all else fails he may just be a sterile cock bird. Or before antibiotic meds Try Wheatgerm oil , it is Vitiman E and is the fertility vitamin , but DONT over do it like all supplements you can do more harm then good , Mix one desert spoon to half kilo of seed
June 27, 200817 yr Also, Renee....check the perches in that cage....if they are wobbly and unstable it can cause these kind of issues
June 27, 200817 yr Author Doxy is only available through a vet. Yeah, sorry about that ... I've edited the earlier post. It's also known as psittavet but I only realised that when I looked at the label.
June 27, 200817 yr I think some just haven’t got what it takes, some of mine that have failed I have never even seen them take any interest in the hen. One TCB I bought looks interested in a half hearted way then just puts one leg on her back then steps back again & if he gets on top he just jumps down again & he’s already 4 years old, don’t know if he’s burnt out or just never could make it. Supposed to be a combination of two well-known studs.

June 30, 200816 yr I checked out Renee's set up yesterday and in particular this young cock. He is a large and tall bird and doing all the right moves with his hen. The thing is I am sure he is so large that the perches are too thin for him to get a good grip. His toes and nails would overlap the perch. Needs new and thicker perches I would say. On another note, Renee has a very good set up. Massive breeding room, great new flights built by her husband and all birds looking very happy and healthy. Edited June 30, 200816 yr by KAZ
June 30, 200816 yr Whoo Hoooo that is what I said So Renee this could just be the answer - That or the Cock is is too big for the hen and umm well you know :hap:
July 1, 200816 yr Author Whoo Hoooo that is what I saidSo Renee this could just be the answer - That or the Cock is is too big for the hen and umm well you know Thank you everyone. Yes I've taken your advice and yesterday Tony and I put in some nice thick perches in the 4 breeding cabinets affected. My big green is still the ever attentive partner and the hen has laid 2 more eggs since I chucked the last clear round 5 days ago. I shall give them a week before checking this round though of course they may be clear again .... I think the effects of the new perches may not be appreciated for maybe another fortnight. BUT we shall persevere!!!
