Posted June 27, 200816 yr one of the best things to storing budgerigar seed in a freezer ( less motor not going ) stainless steel inside one is the best , as it is the same temp all year around and nothing can get into it , you can use the lid as a work bench in your bird room too, i store 8 bags of seed at a time ,
June 27, 200816 yr I don't use enough seed to store eight bags, I use rubbish bins (the round type we used to have before we had big bins), they take a 30kg bag of seed or 20kg of dog food perfectly. I have three. one for budgie/tiel mix, one for parrot mix and one for dog food. They have nice tight fitting lids so nothing gets in.
June 27, 200816 yr Thats very interesting! Thanks for the tip It would be great for thoes who have to travel great distances to get their seed. Me too MB - I use rubbish bins - mine hold 40kg which last me about 2-3 months at the moment
June 27, 200816 yr I so need to go down to Bunnings and get some bins. The Breeder that I saw today recommended this Budgie seed from a stock shop near me Price wise not bad but not great But I got a 25kg bag so need to get something to hold it all!
June 27, 200816 yr I got my bins from Bunnings $10 ea, heavy plastic garbage bins with lids that click on and just hold the 40kg.......I think lol
June 27, 200816 yr My seed is stored in a large plastic barrel. It has a lid that sits on top and a metal clasp that locks around it effectively sealing the lid and base together. Like this.... It fits 100 kilos in it at a time. About a months supply for my birds. Ken uses some old eskys for his seed in his aviary.
June 27, 200816 yr My aviary is right at the back of the garden and the bins are up in the garage so I have a fifteen litre plastic storage tub which I keep in a corner of the aviary and top up once a week, that way I don't have to cart seed down from the garage every day.

June 27, 200816 yr I use to use plastic till the rats and mice ate their way in , I now use metal , lets see them eat through that!
June 27, 200816 yr Our local bird merchant and seed supplier has these second hand for around $20. Very nice, for that price I would have a couple too
June 27, 200816 yr These drums can be found on ebay....but I can only currently see them in sydney and melbourne and not adelaide PS search for plastic drum.
June 27, 200816 yr Mines in a wheelie bin. They delivered new ones to everyone when a new garbage contractor took over. So I stole the one from across the road where the house is empty. ( At least I'm honest! Well sort off )
June 27, 200816 yr This is how I store my water for the birdroom. Its great to have it " ON TAP " This one isnt mine but mine is exactly like it.
June 27, 200816 yr I store mine in old freezers. Nothing can get into them & keeps cool. I’m using 6 40kilo bags a month.
June 27, 200816 yr How many birds do you have Norm? Thats a fantastic idea Kaz, thanks for sharing, I am making mental notes for when Kozzie (my partner Adam) starts construction on my bird room
June 28, 200816 yr This is how I store my water for the birdroom. Its great to have it " ON TAP " This one isnt mine but mine is exactly like it. Picked up my seed bins today from Bunnings for $10 each Kaz thanks for the tip above, will have to keep and eye out for one of these.

June 28, 200816 yr This is how I store my water for the birdroom. Its great to have it " ON TAP " This one isnt mine but mine is exactly like it. That is BRILLIANT!!!!!!!! Thank you so much sharing that idea!! I am so sick of lugging water! Do you use/buy spring water or do you just refill with tap water??? Andrew, Your seed will be fine. As long as its kept dry, dark and cool it will be fine just make sure you finish the seed before the use by date Edited June 28, 200816 yr by **Liv**
June 28, 200816 yr is it bad to have mine in the trill container, as it doesnt have a seal on it??? i didnt think it would go off or anything... mabye im wrong Nothing wrong with that depends really on how may birds you have and what amount you are getting. I buy 25 - 30 kg at a time so I need to put it in something when I had one bird I had the seed box and just kept it in a cupboard and it was fine.
June 28, 200816 yr The main time when seal can be good is if you get creepy crawlies coming onto your house, a seal discourages pantry moths, cockroaches, mice, etc.
June 30, 200816 yr Bins are great idea for those of us that buy in bulk ..... In saying that they must be AIR TIGHT or you can spoil the seeds ... I use 2 kg Lolly suction jars ( good 'ol Nana she has everything) Also use Plastic screwlids ones

July 1, 200816 yr :hap: My understanding is the seed is not meant to be air tight, just kept dry, dark and cool Airtight or a very good sealed lid helps with any problems of moths getting in though.
