Posted June 23, 200817 yr okay she has seemed to inprove over the last few days. She seems happier and healther eating well. We still have large amounts of poo so I decided to clean it up on the first night gross but that's all part of budgie ownership. Well tonight I noticed that it was a little messy again and again I caught her and cleaned it only to discover that she seems to have lost all her feathers in that area I am not sure if she is plucking them or if they are falling out due to the large amount of poo that she is creating at the moment or if there is another reason. I have read that tail bobbing and missing feathers around the vent is a sign they are in breeding condition but how could she be????? She is sick! Any suggestions PS sorry for the bad picture stupid camera kept trying to focus on the teatowel not the budgie! Also anyone know what could cause a spongey crop and how long I could expect for it to remain if it was for ingesting large amounts of shell grit? Edited June 23, 200817 yr by Angelic Vampyre
June 23, 200817 yr Is she is a breeding cabinet??? or free flight??? Shell grit? Why are you feeding a budgie grit? They can digest their own seed unlike larger parrotts.... ( that is what grit is for )
June 23, 200817 yr She's not feeding her grit Neat, the person she rescued her off did None of mine loose their feathers when in breeding condition. She looks red there, is it inflamed?

( that is what grit is for ) Nope she is in a flight cage 61x41x41 or about that size. I did not feed her grit we believe that the last owner did so she gets seeds and waterless veggies cause of the med's she is on. She's not feeding her grit Neat, the person she rescued her off did None of mine loose their feathers when in breeding condition. She looks red there, is it inflamed? It looks it but I flipped Lemon over and size wize she it's about the same size as far as i can tell cause lemon has feathers (they are about the same size budgie) Sky is just just missing all the feathers... I might leave it and keep an eye on it over the week and on Saturday see about getting another vet app as she seems to be getting better but the spongey crop and this, maybe I am just expecting to much to soon. I have not seen her pluck them but you never know with Budgies
June 23, 200817 yr did you take her to the vet? Early here I thought you said you did - I can't remember. Worms possible?
June 23, 200817 yr Author did you take her to the vet? Early here I thought you said you did - I can't remember. Worms possible? Yes she was at the vets on Friday and on meds I think I will keep and eye on it, don't want to have to stress her out to catch her each day but think I might have to. If it gets worse then straight to the vets if it is no better by Saturday then to the vet if it gets better will just keep an eye on it.
June 23, 200817 yr maybe the antibiotics are causing irritation too? they can cause the poo's to be even more watery? Make sure you weigh her daily for weight loss.
June 23, 200817 yr Author maybe the antibiotics are causing irritation too? they can cause the poo's to be even more watery? Make sure you weigh her daily for weight loss. I tried to do this but none of my scales will weigh her so I have to go find one that takes VERY small amounts. Her poo is still very green and lots of it but not as watery as before.
June 23, 200817 yr Author If I get time a Lunch today I am going to go out and buy one. I do want one cause I think I should weigh my Budgies each time that I treat / catch them that way I can catch issues early on.
June 23, 200817 yr Oh poor Sky, Her vent doesn't look good in my eyes either Here is a poop site ----> HERE Is her poops any of thoes???
June 24, 200817 yr AV, this is the thing with resuce birds, there history can be vauge, hopefuly she will get better .... She looks, red down there can you get her to a avain , vet .... is there alump there or is it just swallon and red with plucked feathers .... Have you given wormer, or mite treatments????? Does she scratch her self on the perches????? what perches are in the cage .... Just ruling out any allergic reactions
June 24, 200817 yr Neat I know she has special wide perches installed because of her unsteadiness on her legs and that the bird has been to a good vet. AV I just recalled that a while ago I pulled a bird out of my aviary that had watery poops and he had lost alot of feathers from around his vent so maybe it is the irritation from the 'runs'. I know that my bubba gets a bad nappy rash if he has a belly bother so I guess the poops may be quite acidic, if the poops are 'burning' her bum a bit maybe the irritation is causing the feathers to drop out or for her to over preen the area.
June 24, 200817 yr If that is the case MB with the acid burns - Av use cooled boiled water !!!! or no carb mineral water ....
June 24, 200817 yr Author Oh poor Sky, Her vent doesn't look good in my eyes either Here is a poop site ----> HERE Is her poops any of thoes??? 4th picture down under the blood poop it is sort of like that and LOTS of it! I have not given her wormer but she has had ivimetin (sp?) for mites as she has them. She is on other meds that go in the water from the vet so can't add worming meds in with them. I have not seen her scratch herself on the perches however she as large flatish perches as she could not perch on the smaller ones after she had her feet done. Hmmm I have been looking this up and there are a few other people who has said this so going to talk to the vet when my boss leaves and hope that this is the answer.

Budgies who didn't eat anything for a longer time poop green, sticky droppings with almost normally coloured urine portions. Young budgies who recently left the nesting boxes occasionally eat few and therefore their droppings may be green what doesn't mean that they are ill. When they are more experienced in eating, their droppings will show the normal colours. You should always try to find out why a young budgie doesn't eat much. Maybe the parents stopped feeding it and it is in danger of starving to death. Or maybe the chick suffers from a painful infection in his crop. You can recognize this by the sticky feathers on the budgie's head and in the face. If you have any particular suspect which points on an infection, the bird must be cured urgently by a vet who will use an antibiotic to save the chick's life. Perhaps it's all to do with the spongy crop??? Would the medication she is on cause irritation to the skin. Google it and look for any side effects
June 24, 200817 yr Author Perhaps it's all to do with the spongy crop??? Would the medication she is on cause irritation to the skin. Google it and look for any side effects I have just given up, I decided that I am going to bite the bullet and take her to the vet down the road from me, she is very $$$ but suppose to be one of the best in the state. Don't get me wrong I like my vet but there is one guy who is an aviarin vet and the the rest are just trained on the job to be avairan vets if that makes sense. So I booked an app with this vet tonight and really want to get some answers and hopefully a plan to move forward cause I am giving myself stomach ulcers worrying over this little girl and I could be barking up the wrong tree.
June 24, 200817 yr Author Well thanks for nothing! $102 to be told, you should spend $500 to do all these test which most likey will not work cause she has been on meds for the last few days. As for her Crop... "Yes it does seem large but I guess she will clear it in a few day" As for her vent... which I told her about, she had a quick look and went "yes it is very messy" I asked her about the missing feathers and nothing! She just ignored it and seemed upset cause I was not prepared to lay out $500 for her to run a bunch of test which will probley come back clear cause of the drugs she already has in her system. :budgiedance: That really was a waste of time and money and I am no better off and neither is Sky.
June 24, 200817 yr Grrrr... It's so hard when you know NOTHING!!!! Maybe more time is needed on the meds she's on and time will tell... lots of love and prayers form you... Good luck :budgiedance:

Good luck :budgiedance: Thanks I think i will just have to give her time and hope she comes through. I mean, I could run the test which may not work due to the meds she is already on, I could take her off the meds to get her sick so that the test would work... argh i think not! Or I could just give her the meds and hope for the best which is what I think I will have to do.

She has been through sooooooo much, and hopefully time will heal all wounds! More tests, poking and jabbing... she can probably do without for now.
June 24, 200817 yr Author Yeah that is where I am at. At the end of the day the vet said that the treatment might stay the same anyway so I put her through all this stress for nothing... I think I am going to see how we go. My other issue is that Budgies can go 6 weeks without drinking So I might get an eye dropper and each day when I clean her vent i might drop a bit of meds in her mouth to make sure she is drinking cause if she is not then giving her the meds is useless.
