June 23, 200817 yr You can get little infrared ones and also ones that have a switch which turns on when you ask it to. They use them where I work to watch inside possum nest boxes
June 23, 200817 yr You need an infared camera and wireless is better however more expensive (my bf is a computer geek and we where pricing it out last night cause well we have no life!) this site use to have a budgie webcam but looks to not be working now http://www.wylcradio.com/id201.html http://budgielove.net/ seems to have webcams so if you really want you could contact them I guess http://budgerigars.camstreams.com/ - this one seems to work Edited June 23, 200817 yr by Angelic Vampyre
June 23, 200817 yr Author i wish i had a webcam because then i could work out what is going on in the nestbox because i think it could be the male doing the plucking. Lucky the breeding cabinets are outside my back door because i have had to go out a few times and break up fights between the male and female. He is going into the nestbox and removing the nesting material and trying to mate with her and she is getting cranky so they are fighting in the nestbox. i do not think he is feeding her anymore either because when she comes out of the nestbox all he wants to do is mate with her which is properly why she and the babies are loosing weight. Could the males get jealous of the babies and pluck them.
June 24, 200817 yr Might be time to consider taking him out if he isn't feeding her anymore anyway as it sounds like he is also interfering with her ability to feed herself even. Put some millet sprays and celery tops in the nest box for her so she can eat in the box if she needs to and that will also encourage your babies to start picking incase you need to take them out early.
June 24, 200817 yr Author i was thinking i would have to do that because she is so cranky with him that even when he tries to feed the babies she attacks him. Will she be able to look after the babies by her self.
June 24, 200817 yr It sounds to me Deb that that must be your main problem, take him out & maybe take him out of hearing range & then see if things improve, the hen should be able to feed them & certainly will do a bitter job than while being hassled by the cock like you telling us.
June 24, 200817 yr Author would it be okay to put the male into the aviary or should he be by himself for a while. i know hens need to recuperate after having babies before they go back to the main avairy but what about the males.

If you can give him one week in a cage alone with some extra good food to build him up, might be a good idea. At the end of the day...breeding is stress conditions and he does need a rest and maybe build up on food due to possible attempts to feed babies. As Norm says too...away from calling distance to the hen.
June 24, 200817 yr It all sounds a bit mixed up. In one post you say he is not feeding, and another he is feeding the baby's and she is the problem! It's always a risk removing a parent. Is it him or her? Really haven't proved anything either way. Sometimes you can interfere to much and end up creating the problems yourself.
June 24, 200817 yr Author i am sorry if i have confused anyone, i assumed it was her that was causing the problems so i have been watching them and realised that she is not allowing him to feed her or the babies, he has been trying to mate with her and she seems to be getting annoyed with him and when he goes in the nestbox they start fighting.i do not feel i am interfering too much, i really care about my budgies so i want to make sure that they are 100% happy and healthy. They are not just breeding birds to me but my pets.
June 24, 200817 yr Oh Deb. Sounds like he has one thing on his mind. I would probably remove the male. I'm sure your hen will do a good job raising her chicks on her own. Goodluck and I hope it all goes well. :budgiedance:
June 24, 200817 yr Also....Deb....can you please check the hen over for signs of stress....loss of weight, pooey bottom. If she is stressed and gets sick from this then there will be noone to raise the babies unless Dad does it.

If she is stressed and gets sick from this then there will be noone to raise the babies unless Dad does it. the hen has lost weight but no pooey bottom but i have got to the point where i feel that this pair are just not good parents. All the clutches i got from colony breeding where bigger and healthy looking babies and i had no problems with the parents looking after them.i think i am more stressed than the hen.

Just one cabinet breeding is no sign that it all doesnt work. Also, Deb if you are stressed like the hen, please feel down your breastbone for signs of sharpness and check also for pooey bottom :budgiedance: It will all work out in the end Deb. I very good reason to put more than one pair down to breed at the same time...for fosters. At least three pairs.
