Single Black Feathers On Belly/chest?

Featured Replies

I have seen birds with this feature. Try to develop it further. The black-body.

What might be considered a show fault could be an opportunity to create something new.

This hen is nearly four so unless she turns out to be a particular good breeder this will be her last(and only) year of breeding. I may push it for one more year to get some more babies out of her if she does well or atleast let her lay and foster them on but I'm still short on time with her. I don't have any males with this feature though, any suggestions?

The other hen I have has pale black 'spangle' type markings near her vent, they are both opalines. The other hen is an 06 bird so I have a little more breeding time with her, at this stage I am focusing on getting some chicks out of the grey.

I agree with DrNat…it would be an interesting effort, you might breed something new, of course it wont be easy. I have just bred a strange chick also it was in my Dusks nest, but I fostered some chicks there, as they only hatched three, so I haven’t checked it’s ring yet. It is extremely small, which some of the chicks from the Dusks have been, it looks like a Normal Dark Green, but I think it is really an Opaline only time will tell. It’s marked like a Normal, but in the triangle area between the wing butts it is almost Black. It was the last chick in the nest & being so small I was worried when I first put it into the aviary, but it’s a real goer. I like birds like it, once I had a chick where Mum died & Dad stopped feeding it, it was in the late pinfeather stage & I never hand feed birds, so I put it in the aviary & it survived. Some have every chance in the world & still die, I like the survivors…my kind of birds.

Yeah I have seen this !

It's a Texta mark :P

Unless my budgies have a pencil case I haven't seen it's definately not black texta :P So am I gathering from the fact that hardly anyone has any suggestions that this is a fairly uncommon occurance??

Put the cousin offspring of your two hens back together

That's what I figured. I should have my breeding cages set up in the next week or two so I'll put them down then

New Breeding cages *does a happy dance*

Yes keep crossing them back to each other,in 10years you will have some with black feathers on all parts of there body. :D

MB being here for almost 3 years now I have never seen it or no one has ever brought it up, it is probably a rare occurance, when the bird molts does it keep that black feather, could you see if they skin is darker there or pink?

The two girls that have it are 4 years old and two years old and have had it the whole time I have had them. I'll try and check for pigment later. They are both from the same breeder but bought from a pet shop so I might even try and track the breeder down and see if I can get any more 'faulty' birds of him

I love Faulty birds or NQR birds, Look at Ozzie! I will keep an eye out for any as well, also have a chat to Ivan and if he sees any come through get him to put them aside for you and if you want them we can work something out.

Cheers

Ivan could very well end up with some from this breeder G, the breeder is from Box Hill budgie club and I got the birds in Nunawading so if he had lots to cull he could very well spread them around the area.
