Posted June 21, 200817 yr Now next to my aviary is a small garden bed which contains a fish pond, due to there being a water main or something under there the garden bed is very shallow and the pond is not able to be totally burried in. My partner and I plan to raise the garden bed by making a lime stone wall around it to allow us to add more soil in a make it a nice area. To do this a lime stone block or two will have to be up against the aviary wire near the entrance door to prevent sand flowing in. Will this harm the birds in any way or will the lime stone be an added mineral supplement which they're allowed to pick at? If it's toxic to them or harmful I'll have to look at other means or barracades between aviary and stone Any one got any ideas or knowledge on this subject?
June 21, 200817 yr If its real limestone its natural and fine for them. If it reconstituted then it is made up with additives and may not be good for them. You need to know which kind of limestone you are getting.
June 21, 200817 yr I don't know about limestone... but you could always put a sheet of zinc/colourbond (or what ever stuff aviaries are made out of) between the limestone bricks and the aviary wire so they can't get to it.
June 21, 200817 yr Author Nah, don't really want cement, want it to look pretty Bob already looked at the reconstituted limestone and said if we're were able to get the real stuff we'd get that instead, gotta love tax back
June 22, 200817 yr Garden Lime is okay to use , I use it as a germ killer on the floor , Clean the poop off the floor and make a paste of water and garden lime and paint it on , do it on a warm day so it dries quicker. Builders lime which is hydrated is the one you need to watch out for , This is usually what the blocks are made out of .
June 22, 200817 yr Natural limstone is pure limestone. be very clear when you buy that it is important bcause the fake limestone could make your animals crook, that way you should get the right info from them
June 22, 200817 yr It's pretty but expensive I believe, sandstone is a nice option, very similiar to limestone
June 22, 200817 yr Author Oh Lordy!!! looking at those pictures I think I'd MUCH prefer sand stone if lime stone is that grimey haha! Then again I'm no excellent paver so will probably make a botch job of it But hey, alls well that ends well, i'm sure it'll be fun :fear
June 22, 200817 yr That limestone looks a little aged to me, whereas that sandstone is new. They will both age of course
