Posted June 21, 200816 yr I am new to cabinet breeding and I am planning to start my first pairs in 8 weeks or so. Up until now i have always colony bred and my aviary is just outside my window where i can see and hear EVERYTHING that goes on. My bird room however, is right around the other side of the house, in a spot where i will not be able to see or hear the birds. This worries me as I won't be able to provide the quality supervision i have in the past I am thinking about installing a wireless camera that streams to my PC, or at least baby monitor so i can hear them.....????? What do other breeders with bird rooms do to keep and eye on their birds???
June 21, 200816 yr I would be interested to hear the response to this as I have contemplated doing the same thing with my larger birds in the nest box itself (installed inside a little safety cage) so I can watch the babies without disturbing the hen.
June 21, 200816 yr There use to be a guy who had his breeding boxes on line if we can track down who he was then we could get the info off him.
June 21, 200816 yr Why waste your money???. They will be fine. All you need to do do is keep an eye on them when you put them in the cabinet (trust me if the hen rejects the cock it happens within a few hours), if the hen accepts the male then within two weeks you will see an egg.
June 21, 200816 yr That works okay for budgies Ikon, but my larger birds will actually abandon the nest box if I sticky beak, I would like to be able to get them to the age when I will take them for handrearing with little to no contact if possible.
June 21, 200816 yr Author I just make sure I check birds three times a day. But thats so LOW TECH!! I was hoping for an excuse to wire up the place with more gadgets hahaha so cabinet breeding has a LOT less issues than the colony breeding so the supervision can be less...???
June 21, 200816 yr You really only need to check nest boxes and or breeding cabinets morning and late afternoon...I check more due to being home and working from home.
June 21, 200816 yr I generally check the nest box once a day until I start seeing eggs and then a couple of times a day after that.
June 21, 200816 yr I'm always out back so walk past and peek in the fronts of the cabinets, I try to only check IN the acutal nest box twice a day and once a day for eggs... When they're laying If I can see the new egg and the hen is fine then I leave them... When there's chicks I check morning and night to make sure no top up feeds need to be done I don't think I could take it as far as a "security cam" hehe
June 21, 200816 yr It would be like Birdy Big Brother... There are less issues with Cabinet breeding and less checking is needed. I check twice a day if all is well, more if there seems to be issues (unwell chick etc...)
June 21, 200816 yr I love the thought of a webcam - if it gives you peace of mind (even if you don't really need it) then go for it!
June 21, 200816 yr I just think it would be cool to be able to watch what they get up to when they think you aren't looking
June 21, 200816 yr I just think it would be cool to be able to watch what they get up to when they think you aren't looking Yeah, I agree 100%!
June 26, 200816 yr I check mine morning and late afternoon. I work 3 days a week and this works on my work days and I dont want to fuss too much with them on their days off. I must say though, my first 3 cabinet babies are really calm and easily handled, much more so than the aviary babies, even though I checked/handled them reasonably frequently also.
