July 2, 200816 yr Author okay so I got a quote last night for the breeding room. Few things came up, one is that a plaster ceiling is not going to work so I have to put cerment sheet up. Also thanks to a pillar and the roof I have to make the room about a foot bigger then planned which means that the little front section will not be turned into a gym but now a storage area, hopefully I can convert it into flights at a later date and put windows in the front. Cages should be arriving today which is good cause I am at Budgie explosion limit, more cause I have run out of cages rather then run out of room in the avairy and I have a few new guys in so can't throw them all out in the avairy, and I feel sorry for the guys who have to be cramped in the smaller ones. Also Mozzie has taken to laying egg at the bottom of the avairy *bangs head against wall* however DQ got all upset with her (that's what happens when you steal another hens man Mozzie) and attacked her and smashed the eggs, yes I know it was her cause I saw it going on and have the bite marks to prove it when I tried to split them up! So Mozzie is in a converted Box which is doubling as a hospital cage with a light, some bleeding around the head and broken feathers but she pulled up okay. DQ is in the smaller transport cage in time out. She got a bunch of broken feathers but no bleeding.... really need the new cages so I can keep those two split up! All up I am going to beat the $2000 mark hopefully no more. Work should start not this weekend but next.
July 7, 200816 yr Author After a few false starts here is where I am upto. Cages coming today Builder coming in during the week to do the electrics and then coming in on Saturday to do all the other stuff. I will then paint on Sunday and over the next week. Lino to go down on the floor next week, and I have to purchase avairy wire to attach to the frame (any ideas on where to buy this?) Then hopefully once the paint fumes go I can start moving the guys in! *does a happy dance* Will post pictures as I do things, going to start moving stuff around tonight when I get home from work between setting up the new cages and dropping cages off to MB
July 7, 200816 yr Once paint and lino goes in............OPEN DOORS WIDE for dissipation of all fumes. Lino also carries formaldehyde fumes and toxic to birds. So make sure its all aired out and no smells left before birds go in. Stock feeders and stock and bird supply stores sell aviary mesh. Edited July 7, 200816 yr by KAZ
July 7, 200816 yr Author Will do, IF and a big IF my cages get here today I am going to set them up on the Patio and bring the patio cage into the house with the quaratine guys in it so that they can be moved into the flight cages for a good week at least to allow the fumes to go away as I don't even want to risk them being in the avairy which is just outside the door.
July 7, 200816 yr Have you organised your mesh screen door so you can vent the area for fresh air and the birds all be safe ? Recycled flyscreen doors fitted with aviary mesh are good and easily hinged as an inner door. Try and get one that is half metal bottom and screen top and then there is less to mesh with aviary mesh. A lot of rubbish tips have recycle areas now where you can buy these things for very little cash outlay.
July 7, 200816 yr Author My Builder took one off an breeding room that he was converting into a granny flat :budgiedance: so he snaged it for me so I don't even have to do anything with it, it comes all ready with avairy wire so yeah and also it is free!
July 10, 200816 yr Author okay started clearing today and sorting everything out, god I have alot of junk in my room. Is it Saturday yet? Have a 10 year old coming on Saturday to help me put together the remaining cages and paint. Also going to help me lay the lino (or watch me lay the lino) I am hoping that I can get one coat of paint on this weekend and then do another coat during the week. Then Lino down next weekend and the aviary wire over the middle wall then let it air for a week then I am away for a weekend (bf taking me away) However MB gave me a laptop that does not work (my bf is a computer geek so he will make it work) and I have a desk that I might getting given. I also got my water dispenser that does hot and cold water just need to get a bottle for it. Also need to get a bagless vac but that will have to come later.... Oh got to go to the bank on sat as well so i then can be broke!
July 10, 200816 yr The desk is in the garage waiting for you if you still want it Does the wire go close to the ground on the door? Don't forget mice will get through standard mesh so if you want it to be mouse proof so you can leave the main door open on mild nights, etc you'll need something finer or a metal area on the lower part of the door to stop them. July 10, 200816 yr Author MB I forgot about the desk you offered me.... now I have two in the works! I have not seen the door yet so will have to wait and see what it is like. Also with the aviary mesh I am going to go and look at some over the weekend and hopefully find some that is mouse proof. I found some the other day but I thought that Budgie could get through it, the guy promised blue murder that they could not took a sample home and guess what... Buddy can fit through it  So that one went out the window. Can someone advise me of the width or the size it should be? I found this one place that does cage wire, and they can litteraly cut me "planks" of the stuff and you lay them next to each other, great idea but I work out the cost and had a small heart attack! Hmmm might go check out ebay.....
July 10, 200816 yr I get my 13mm x 13mm from Stratco (harware store) They sell it in rolls in the same area as Chicken wire. They have all sizes and types. It's about $8 per meter, but its quite wide too
July 11, 200816 yr Remember when aiming for mouseproofing....its not just about the wire they can squeeze through but any wire they can clinb higher up to get through. When you consider that mousebait wooden boxes have a hole the diameter of around 12mm for the mouse to enter and eat, they can squeeze through some pretty tiny spaces. The best way to mouseproof is tin or hard plastic sheeting from floor to at least 2 feet up. Stops them going through and stops them running up to where they can get through. July 11, 200816 yr If you want you can have a piece of my flexible stainless steel mesh for the door, it has holes about 5 or 6 mm across and would be very easy to fit even to a metal door as it is flexible and very fine so it could be fitted using that standard little piping stuff they put around flywire. I have had a piece of it on Suzie's (corella) cage ever since I got it to test whether she could chew through and she hasn't even been able to bend it.
July 11, 200816 yr Author Will have to have a look at that, think I am going to get everything else done and then work out the wire. Also the guys in Quarantine all got out today! Not sure how so if anyone has come bread clips can they send them my way?
