Indoor Breeding Room

There does not seem to be a section for breeding set ups so hopefully posting this in the right area.

okay so my dad wants to know if I want to breed budgies then I either do it right or not do it at all. First off none of my budgies are show quality the only one that comes even close is Boof and even then a big not really.

So he has said no more low quality birds or pet type birds, not going to go off and buy top $1000 birds but you get my drift. So I spent today doing up plans for my breeding room.

planone.jpg

Basically the back section will be a breeding room the front will be a gym, not sure if we are going to divide it off no one told me.

A few things to note. Dad said to place the cages short end against the wall to give the birds a more colony feel. Also the stands that I plan on using hold 3 to 4 cages however the bottom one will not be used as it's low and if my dogs get in there they will terrorize the birds and the 4 cage stands the tops are too high cause I am short :( so I will have 6 breeding cages at any one time (two per stand). The Holding cage will be for young birds or cull birds to sell to other people etc....

To tell you the truth I only think I will ever have 4 pairs on the go at one time just because of the time factor.

The other side of the shed will have a bench and a bar fridge (to keep the veg and medications in) as well as all my seed supplies and anything else I need.

My big issue is that I can't put a window in so I am thinking of changing the garage door over for either bi folding doors with frosted glass or a LARGE window and one door, again with frosted glass to allow light in but not allow everyone to see in. My issue here is the Body Corp but I think it would look nicer then the garage door. The back door is going to be changed over for a door with a glass panel rather then a solid door and if and big IF I had the money somewhere down the track I would LOVE to put a sky light in. I am also going to paint the walls (anyone know if one color makes Budgies breed more then others???)

So this is the view of my front door and garage (and my two puppies complaining that I am letting the cold in)

The back door

That Opens to the existing aviary

The roof, I thought it was better insulated but in the second shot you can see the though the rip so going to have to talk to someone about that

Also going to have to fix up the light situation

I need to re measure just to make sure everything will fit where we think it will.

If anyone has any suggestions then please let me know. This is in it concept stage so I would rather have 100 hints and ideas rather then build it and get told... "oh if you had done blah it would have worked better."

So Ideas suggestions thoughts?

WOW What a plan!!! I look forward to watching your progress.

The only suggestions i would make is to add a screen door for ventilation.

I have been told that fluro lights are fine for adding light and you can put them on a timer so the birds have more light hours, just like summer :D The lights would also be A LOT cheaper than ALLLLLLL the $$$$$$$$$$$ you would spend on the glass doors :(

If you are going to paint i would say a nice natural green would make the budgies feel most comfortable

:(

I was planning on putting a screen door on the back that is locked so that I could have the glass door open 95% of the time only really closing it during the night time for added protection.

I like the green idea for paint thanks for that

Very exciting for you :( My suggestion right now is to replace a sheet or two of the roof tin for some laserlite clear sheets. Opal is better than clear and spreads light around. That will give you lots of light.

If you are painting the walls it will have to be safe paint fumes wise, as your other birds are close by as well. White paint would be better to reflect light. If you can get a cheap flyscreen door from a junk yard that fits the size of the access door you have now, you can hinge it on the inside as a safety door come ventilation door. I have that set up in my safety area / storage area. I took the flyscreen off and put aviary mesh on the flyscreen door which made it more stable.

Placement of the breeder cages is best worked out to gain maximaum light over any feeling of colony...as light promotes breeding and darkness does the reverse.

Can you redo your plan as a link and larger to see ?

Cheers Kaz

Does that help Kaz?

I like the idea about the laserlite clear sheets will look into them. I would put them over the breeding cage/breeding area.

I have also been thinking about putting some form of avairy mesh wall with a door int he middle that way if birds get out they do not get to the front section and the gym stuff which could be dangerous if someone is on something.

you are right about the white paint however.

Thanks, lots of things to think about and price out.

Sounds good to me :(

I don't have any suggestions as my cabinets are all just out the back :(

But I hope it all works out for you, and I like forward to updates :D

okay after measuring things out I have had a rethink about how to place the cages. I have to admit I sat down and was like, I want this and this and this and this and this and then Dad and Rob said "okay but you have this amount of money..." Opps! :budgiedance:

So my plan of attach is,

  • Cages (which are coming in the next few weeks that way IF I need them I can set them up on my back patio)
  • Back door wire (will pick one up and replace wire with avairy wire)
  • Roof & Lights & Elec, (going to get plaster board sheets put up with instuation bats above them between the beems. I also want some power points in the garage as I need to plug the tread mill in but also for the fridge etc...)
  • Paint, (I can't do this till my boss removes all her junk and till the roof is done)
  • Floor, (going to paint and then under the cages lay a small amount of lino just to help with cleaning)
  • Partition (Going to get a frame made about half way down the garage that will allow me to attach avairy wire to it, there will also be a simple door in this frame that way if I bird gets out then they can not get to the gym equitment)
  • Back Door Glass (will see if I can find a second hand one or pick one up cheap somewhere along the line)
  • Front door Glass (this really depends on the Body Corp letting me do it. If not then I need to find a way to seal it up better as there is a draft that comes through it.

I want to do the skylight but working out costs it is something that I might do much later down the track when I have more money.

I really just want my boss to pick up all her stuff so I can get started.

Anyone know which is the best brand of paint to use? I went to a paint store and was told to use one brand cause it was baby safe but reading the back of the pack it says not to use around small animals!

I am going with White walls and concrete grey floor, the paint for the floor that I was going to use is not great with fumes so maybe I just get the good stuff and all the birds will have to move out of the avairy for a few days.

Why am I starting to feel like this is a much bigger job then I originally thought? :D

The planning is half the fun of it. Very exciting and may give you a few sleepless nights. I have just had to changed the inside floor plan of my new birdroom based on where the window is, where the sink will be, the benchtop section etc. BUT, the new plans enable me to have more wall space for cabinets too. It IS exciting, making things better and more streamlined for the birds.

You might have to go scrounging at some junk yards, council recycling places or bulk refuse throwouts for your doors etc. Amazing what you can find when your eyes are open :budgiedance:

I think no matter what paint you use you will have that problem AV. I would say seal well around the back door while you are painting so the fumes don't get through and then give it a few good weeks to air out before you put birds in. What about a nice pae mint green, still reflects the light but a little less stark :budgiedance:

I want to put a sink in, there is water running to the outside toliet but I got a cost and it has to go on a wall I don't want it to go on and I think for the time being it will go on my wish list. :budgiedance:

Yeah I have been looking today and think that I might have an issue. What I plan on doing is either literally pick up the avairy and move it to the other end of the garden or move the birds into the breeding cages that I am going to get. I also sort of want the slab for the avairy laid first as then workment are not going to be trampling through my nice clean breeding room.

As for green i was thinking that going to have to do colour samples and see what I can work out.

Hey if you are getting a sink let me know. My parents are about to replace their laundry trough with a bench/sink so they might be happy to send their old one to a new home. I don't think it's actually that old I seem to have it in my head that it was only put in about 5 years ago. It's one of those stock standard white metal laundry cupboards with the deep metal trough and a small cupboard.

Darn it! Now you got me thinking :budgiedance: okay will have to talk to the builder when he comes to see me.

No romises but if you are interested I'll ask :P I'm not sure when thier work is being done but fairly soon I believe.

Whatever at the moment I am so mad my boss was suppose to get rid of all her stuff out of my garage by the middle of next month at the latest and instead I find out the end of September is when she is looking at doing it so all plans are on hold untill then!

Couldn't she put it in one of those storage boxes! It's your garage, why don't you just explain that you are getting renovations done and you need your garage back.

Totally agree :P

Cause I have an inablilty to say no :P

You guys have never meet my boss, and I did offer so I can only get upset with my self

okay well then you have to say it diplomatically. Try "September is fine, but if you can do it any earlier let me know because I'm looking forward to setting my gym up" That way you aren't saying no but she might just decide to try and organise it earlier for you :P

Could you move her stuff into the gym area and start working on the bird area first ?

Well just spoke to her asked her to remove the large items so I can move everything to the middle/front to do the roof and mark off the Budgie section and just do it and the gym later down the track.

There is a site that is aimed at recycling and reducing landfill so you can find stuff there for free.It is www.freecycle.org and you could advertise that you are looking for a door and if anyone has one they do not want they will let you know. i have got some great bargains for free from my freecycle group in my local area.

Sounds very exciting! I look forward to further developments. Good luck!!

Does sound interesting, can't wait for the final outcome

Hey AV I'm a member of my Melbourne freecycle and my local one so let me know if you want more info. Do a search on yahoo groups for it and it will come up
