Posted June 19, 200817 yr Dear Members, My name is Wissam and I am new to this forum. I have recently become an owner of two budgies and after some time they have finally bred and we have one egg!!! Unfortunately i came back home to find that the cage had been attacked, and a cat has tipped the cage over and broken the top off allowing the female to either fly away or worse.... Now I have an egg and her grieving mate to tend to. I would like to know if anyone can give me some advice about hatching the egg. It is not damaged and the male keeps coming in and out of the breeding box looking for his mate. I have been terribly saddened by this event as I had become very attached to this pair and to buy another female for the him seems almost like betrayal. Can anyone help. Warm Regards Wissam
June 19, 200817 yr Hello and welcome. I am sorry for your loss :hap: When was the egg laid? Have you been able to see if its fertile by shining a light trough it and seeing if there are veins or masses inside? Personally i feel that the poor little egg won't have much chance without the hen as males don't do the incubating. Males also struggle to feed very young chicks, that is also the hens job. If your hen escaped the cat she may come back. Keep a close eye out - some have come back as long as 5 days after flying away. I hope it all goes well. Keep us posted. PS. a moderator will be by and will move your post and mine to a new topic, that way it's easier for people to find Edited June 19, 200817 yr by **Liv**
June 19, 200817 yr If the egg is only newly laid and a first egg, it will not have been incubated yet. Unless you have another hen with eggs already there is nothing you can do with the egg at all. Best to worry about a search for your hen instead, as she may be nearby. Check with neighbours and do a letterbox drop in your neighbourhood. Its surprising how many birds turn up having been found just doors away.
