Bed Time

Hey all,

what is a good bedtime for budgies, what time do i say 'goodnight' and put the sheet over the cage???

Why this time if you have an opinion.

Is there any affects if you dont???

^_^

My lot go to bed about 8:30pm - i cover them up and turn off the light so i can watch TV in peace hahaha. They get up about 7:30am and They all do fine with 11 hours sleep ^_^

If for what ever reason they get a late night, they just tend to be a bit quieter the next day

Sun up and sundown is a good measure to go by...they go to bed at dusk and awake at dawn.

Mine are in an outside aviary... so they go by the sun, as Kaz said. ^_^

It might depend on when you get up. If you cover them up at night then obviously you'll need to uncover them in the morning. I've read that budgies need about 11 hours of sleep, so if you're uncovering them at 7am, I guess they should go to bed around 8pm? Though I tend to cover my budgies up when I go to bed (which can be quite late) but often they nap on and off once the sun sets even if the light is on.

I do ( when I remember as I am baby sitting :D ) sun up and sun down too - usually they are awake before sun up lately ^_^

My budgies would not be very impressed with me if I put them to bed now. They are currently flying round the room and chirping. And one of them is trying to court the curtain? ^_^

:hap:

Mine would be very put out if it put them to be at sun down too. :hap: The cheeky little guys (3 of them) make so much noise when i am trying to watch TV and i have the 2 cockatiels fighting over which shoulder to sit on.

My birds are quite active and playful at this time of night while all their relatives in the aviary sleep

Yeah! I'm lucky though because my budgies are at the other end of the house to the TV. They were both grazing on the carpet (not actually the carpet, just seeds that have fallen there) a few minutes ago. Now the one who was courting the curtain is now courting the ladder (imagine if he ever met a female budgie!) and the cuttlefish "bone" - I think these days he'll court anything, he must have a great imagination. :(

 - imagination is probably caused by sleep deprivation  when he starts trying to mate with your hand you know he needs more sleep time :hap:

I don't think that'll ever happen unfortunately :D they don't really like humans :( but they'll still jump on your hand because they know they'll get to visit the "big" mirror (my wardrobe doors) with the "other budgies". :hap: Actually, one of them even puts his foot on the mirror like it is a female budgie!

They do say (for humans) that being fatigued is like have a blood alcohol concentration of over 0.05, I wonder if it is the same for budgies? :D

I cover Merlin up between 7:30 - 8 pm or he gets really loud and asks to be covered and then uncover him around 7am or now since the kids are home from school when they wake up so he gets is dark time , he is in my office so sometimes I will keep the front uncovered and talk to him before they wake up.

Your poor little Day Light deprived Budgies, Birdluv ... How could you do that to them ? You are making them in to hoodlum night hawk budgies.

In winter i cover my birds at 5:00 because its gets cold and dark quickly and then uncover them at 6:30 the next morning and in Summer I cover them between 5:30 and 6:00 and uncover them at 6:00 the next morning so pritty much my birds get about 12-13 hours sleep each night.

Thanks heaps everyone, i cover mine when i go to bed and uncover when i wake up.

:P

As I work during the day and dont arrive home till almost dark I tend to let Charley "stay up" until about 8pm, that way we get to spend a little time together. When I get home he is generally sitting quietly (as its dark-ish) but springs to life when I walk in. He greets me with a "good morning Charley, what's for dinner? Give us a kiss".

He loves the tv (especially the footie ...Friday nights he's allowed to stay up a bit later to watch the footie!). I leave at 6am in the morning so have to uncover him while it is still dark and the light is on. As soon as the cover comes off he's into his "repertoire" of about 20 phrases, like a little wind up toy thats been fully wound. I'm sure he goes back to sleep when I turn off the light and leave.

Maxie on the other hand is a totally different character, nowhere near as active as Charley. I uncover her also before I leave (they're in different rooms), but she tends to stay quiet. She also likes to go to bed earlier, generally around 6.30pm. I sometimes wonder if Charley gets enough sleep time but he seems to be totally content so I guess he does.
