Posted June 17, 200817 yr This is Ozzie: He is a double factor spangle masking dominant(dutch) pied (his pied markings show through his DF spangle ) I want to test mate him and I have two girls to choose from, I like the idea of putting him with the grey as I would like to know if he is split blue but I would be interested in others opinion of these girls, they are both opaline. Note that the grey girl has mild ricketts so she naturally can't stand as tall as her green friend but she is actually bigger than the green one in general. Also ignore the dirty faces, these two both came from the same place and both have a penchant for wet food, they tend to dive in head first!!
June 17, 200817 yr The grey hen has the better head to improve the cock as long as she is up to breeding.
June 17, 200817 yr Author I was hoping you would say that I would like to let her have a go atleast once, so we'll see how she does.
June 17, 200817 yr Thicker perches or maybe a platform to make things easier for her. Be very sure she is in tip top shape and can handle the cock atop her. How old is the photo??? They grey hen is VERY out of condition in this photo She definitely is out of condition in this photo
June 17, 200817 yr Author She was actually in condition until about a week ago which is kind of annoying. It doesn't matter now though because Ozzie is in quarantine so I have a little bit of time up my sleeve, I've brought her in and put her in an indoor cage and I'm feeding her up so I can be sure that she has everything in her favour when I do put them together.

Put some calcivet in her water.
June 17, 200817 yr Author All my birds get it already as standard, this will continue now she is inside
June 17, 200817 yr I'd go the grey too as the greens and grey are the biggest bred. Those 2 are shaggy aren't they lol
June 17, 200817 yr Author Yep They're my fluff balls! The grey one escaped from the aviary the other day as I was going in and couldn't even fly out of the backyard, she ended up on the grass and I just picked her up
June 17, 200817 yr I almost want to brush them! You know if you do get one out of Ozzie and the Grey hen then I am putting my hand up for one!
June 17, 200817 yr Author I'm gonna give the grey a go first, if we are lucky she is able and he is split blue and we might get a blue baby out of him The grey is three years old so I would like to breed her if I can now and keep her babies but I would be happy to send one to you, atleast I know where to find it for a future joint project if necessary Even if he isn't spli his babies with this girl will be so they will stil be good for your blue gene pool...
June 17, 200817 yr Thanks i am a little in love with Ozzie! I am thinking (if everything does to plan) that I would put a little girl form them to Cloud in two springs time so that would be late 2009 early 2010. Always happy to loan her back to you if you want!
June 17, 200817 yr I'm going to be blunt. Which is not like me! The cock bird, The DF Spangle/ Dutch Pied?? Why would someone put a dutch pied to a DF spangle?? Beats me!! he looks a bit over weight otherwise he looks O.K The hens to be honest are a mess. Grey has better head as someone pointed out but has poor wings. I think you would have a better chance with the Grey green. Either way they need a bit of work! I hope you breed something Keep us posted! Too blunt had to edit Edited June 17, 200817 yr by throwback
June 17, 200817 yr Author Don't worry throwback I can handle blunt Im not sure if her wings are as bad as they look if that makes sense. She holds herself at a funny angle because of her bad legs and it makes her wings look revolting, on the odd occasion that I can get her to stand up straighter her wings look much nicer. I have really got NO idea why anyone would breed that combination but I am still interested to see what he has hiding. :fear This is only a test , mating anyway so it is more about understanding his genetics that anything else. Should add too TB that my birds are unrung and I have no plans to show with them any time soon, this is all practice, learning how to combine genes and seeing what results I get, all my babies goto approved pet homes only. When I do feel that I am ready to get into showing I will be doing some more research and buying myself some 'proper' show birds to get started Edited June 17, 200817 yr by melbournebudgies

Beats me!! he looks a bit over weight otherwise he looks O.K I am going to look like a nob here but why would you not put a dutch pied with a DF spangle?? Is it a colour thing or is it just cause of how the birds look? Sorry but I came from a house hold that only and when I say only I mean ONLY breed Normal Blues so the whole mutation thing has me stumped and I am trying to work it out so more information would be nice. Again sorry if it sounds like a stupid question.
June 18, 200817 yr Author I meant to say before too that I actually felt if anything he was a little underweight, there's a lot of fluff there!
June 18, 200817 yr Grey has better head as someone pointed out but has poor wings. TB, I have noticed this too with the english ( show) ones the grey's wings are poor quality. But the sizes are massive -

When I do feel that I am ready to get into showing I will be doing some more research and buying myself some 'proper' show birds to get started I thought she had a bung leg! You can tell by her wide stance. But I edited it out as I didn't want to be to harsh on her. That fine's that you are practicing, I hope that you get something. It's just I have seen it a thousand times before, people buy birds that aren't right, they don't breed than get discouraged and give it away! Not that I'm saying that the birds are not right, but it is more difficult to breed from show stock. But hay nothing ventured nothing gained!! Good luck
June 18, 200817 yr Author Didn't buy her she was a freebie due to being a gimp She's three years old so this is really the last chance I will get to see if she is capable of breeding and I have a number of other pairs I am starting over the next few weeks too so if she is struggling atleast I will have fosters available. Ozzie seems to have more of what is considered a proper wing (tips meeting nicely , etc) and she has a boofier head so hopefully they will bring out the best in each other in thier chicks but as you know these things are sometimes hit and miss and you just have to hope for the best.
