Why is it that when you really want a specific bird to lay they wont? I have a green series show tcb that i desperatley want to have offspring but it just wont do anything i have it in with a lutino who has laid before but they just wont do anything. No preening kissing nothing? Will they eventually get together or should i just swap them around again? they have been in the cabinet for 3 weeks now

I would remove the box and try again in a week or 2

I cant take the box out as it is a wire cabinet and there is a whole? She isnt showing any interest in the box anyway, they just sit at opposite ends of the cage?

Get some wire and mend it or turn the box around the other way are they in breeding condition look at their cere and see

They are in condition brown crusty cere and bright blue cere the tcb is 4 years old and the hen is 3 years old. Thats why i am desperate for them to start laying because he is nearly 5 and i have heard people say that you should not breed them past 5?

Maybe he isn't rich enough or hasn't got the right pick up lines .......

Try teaching him to say

" how you doin' "

LOL, sorry mate I couldn't resist that one, I am clueless, apart from what i wrote above in the previous post.

So should i leave them? Has anyone ever had budgies that never pair? Or does it always happen with time?

Its okay to breed the cock after 5 years if he is well and in condition...it hens after age 4 that you have to worry about.

Brown and crusty cere is just past breeding condition. Timing wise you have just missed the boat. Rest them out of breeding cage, where they can fly and get fit again and try again in a few weeks.

Im confused now? I have birds laying with pale ceres and some with dark brown crusty ceres??? So what should it look like when they are in prime condition?

I do understand your confusion as these hens can vary a great deal. Many show breeders will have in their aviaries a nestbox that is wide open and when they see hens going in and out of the nestbox entry hole then these are the hens ready to breed and who are then put in the breeding cabinet. Sometimes its more about the way they act than cere colour. Your hen isn't acting like she is interested in breeding so it would be best to give her a break and try again later ...a few weeks time perhaps.

Yeah i think i will take your advice and pull the two out tommorow. I just dont want him to pair up with anyone in the process i really want the tcb to the lutino because they are both good sizes. I will give it a go and see what happens. Do you know of anyone who seperates there males and females?

Most people I know keep mixed flights. But if you have agood sized cage where your hen can rest for awhile on her own, try that and pair them up again in 3-4 weeks time. The weather will be nicer by then as well
