Posted June 17, 200817 yr Hey all ... okay I have a drama occuring at the moment, I didn't mention it earlier as I though it might have been from the feeds i was giving the parents, However it hasn't changed ..... 2 out of the 5 babies have food stuck under their beaks, this has been happening for the last 2 weeks .... The parents this time around are really mesy feeders could this be why?? It has never happened before to any of my chick as i check them every day ..... So what is it from ... The parents are feed calcivet, seeds, fruit and veg, egg & Biccy mix and lots of soft food .... I held of on the soft food for a few days to see if this was the reason but nope it's still the same ...... Any help advice would be a great treat I am picking the stuck food out twice a day
June 17, 200817 yr Its just one of those things we have to check with baby budgies in nests Neat. In my article about Care of Baby Budgies in a Nest I talk of picking the food out. It can create the undershot beak issue if not attended to, and I dont think diet has anything to do with how or why it happens.
June 17, 200817 yr Author Kaz I have that bookmarked LOL and i just re read it then I will keep my eyes on these too ....
June 17, 200817 yr One of my hens did this to her two chicks last summer - i had to pick out food every day or so. I couldn't find a cause, it was just her feeding technique i think.
June 17, 200817 yr Author Yeah Liv, that is what I am putting it down to. This is their first real clutch, the other one (1 chick ) was a foster one. They both are very messy feeders too! All the food is on their babies faces ........
June 17, 200817 yr Yeah Liv, that is what I am putting it down to. This is their first real clutch, the other one (1 chick ) was a foster one. They both are very messy feeders too! All the food is on their babies faces ........ and thats another thing to watch for too. Messy feeders often clog up their babies nostrils with sticky food and the chicks cannot breathe. Checking often is the way to go.
June 17, 200817 yr Author I haven't had any problems, with the food in their nostrils. In saying that i will however be sure to keep my eyes open for that too ..... They are going great guns, and the one i thought was a cinny is getting sooooo pretty. it's white with a violet tail
