Late last night i purchase some aviary wire from ebay that was advertised as bird wire and now i have won it i realised that the holes are 18mm which i know mice will get through so how high should i put make the colourbond walls from the ground to keep mice out or is it not good wire at all for a aviary.i realise now it is not a good idea to browse ebay when you are tired.

When you consider bird cage bars should be 12 mm or less then the 18 mm wire might just allow escapes of smaller budgies. The average aviary wire is 12mm by 25mm and even that allows mice through it. Traps sold to hold mouse bait have a half inch hole for them to get in and eat the bait.

I think your aviary wire might be best put back on ebay to sell.

i have not pay for the wire yet and i have noticed the guy sells other size wire so i am hoping if i explain my mistake he might let me purchase some of the better wire from him instead.

Good idea. He may try and talk you into the wire you won, but it would be great if he had an alternative he was happy to let you have :P

I have never had an issue with square wire of that size with my budgies squishing through but I wouldn't use bars of that width for budgies. My aviary was given to me and the wire is heavy duty 2 x 2 cm stuff and not one of my birds has ever tried to get through it. I wouldn't use it for finches though :P

i am more worried about mice because i have always got mice around my place even though i have 2 cats. they are too lazy to catch the mice.

If someone was bidding against you, the sellerr might allow the next highest bidder to get the wire instead. Some eBay sellers can be very VERY rude about changes of mind etc. Some even leave negative feedback etc - just tread carefully when dealing with the seller :P

i have decide to let my husband contact the seller and see what we can work out.i hope that he is a understanding guy and if we offer him more money for better wire than he will be happy with that.

Mice will get through the smaller wire though anyway, just don't forget that. Unless you get wire which is 5mm x 5mm or similiar you will still need a mouse guard.

Deb, My MIL did the same but with a cage, the seller was happy to not continue with the transaction just tell them straight away that it was a mistake due to the wire being too large for your birds

Good news, the seller is happy to sell me a roll of the 12mm wire instead for a extra cost but i do not mind paying more money to get wire that is suitable.

Its just for budgies, isnt it Deb ? Because that 12 mm square wire is thinner guage.

it is just for a aviary for the budgies, the 12mm wire is a thicker gauge than the 18mm. the gauge is 1.3mm where as the 18mm wire was only 0.8mm.
