Posted June 16, 200817 yr I have finally found the rainbow lorikeet of my dreams! He is a boy, 9 months old, called Nitro and comes complete with huge cage for $130! He talks, wolf whistles, and is tame! I can't wait to go pick him up this weekend! Any rainbow owners out there got any advice? I know a few of you have them! Thanks, Sam
June 16, 200817 yr Treat him like a toddler with wings. They chuck tantrums, lash out when they are cranky and they are your best friend when they are in a good mood My girl goes on time out with the cover over her cage for 5 min when she is naughty. I find something I know she hates (the tea towel) when she is out and have it on hand, if she misbehaves I show it to her and she immediately starts behaving again
June 21, 200817 yr Author Have picked Nitro up now! He's awesome fun! I show him the towel when hes being bad and he behaves too. He bites, so am trying to break him of that by locking him in his cage and ignoring him. He LOVES attention!
June 21, 200817 yr Author Oh, sorry, Ive lost my computer download cord so unfortunatly can't post any photos until I either find it or buy one! Nitro is standing on me now, while I type, attemping to help, licking the laptop and my fingers! He's a beautiful lorikeet!
June 21, 200817 yr Their diet is really quite different then that of our seed eating birds, so my advice is to really read up on their diet that is so very important. Congrats.
June 21, 200817 yr Good point Elly, I can recommend Vetafarm golden lori mix. They love apples and other fruit like strawberries, peach, etc. I am also trying mine with natural enrichment bowls, things like odd shaped gumnuts and lily pily fruit.
June 21, 200817 yr Author Im feeding Nitro on Harmony Lorikeet mix, farex baby food, apples, grapes, corn at the moment, and he loves it! Where can I buy Vetafarm Golden Lori Mix from Melbbudgies? How much? What's your one called? Edited June 21, 200817 yr by maesie Please avoid using short cuts.
June 21, 200817 yr Vetafarm is pretty comparable. Harmony is the supermarket one yeah? From recollection that's about $6 for 500g. Ibuy 2kg of Vetafarm for about $25. I also like Avione which is about the same price. Personally I found that we went through more of the Harmony brand, being a 'cheap' brand I think it has more fillers. I also have a bloke over my way who sells home made lorie mix for $10 a kg, it's great quality he actually supplies it to Healesville Sanctuary. Once I use up the stuff I have I will probably switch to his. I just bought the Vetafarm or the Avione from my local pet shop I missed the second question, my girl is called Fruit Tingle (Tingles for short) Edited June 21, 200817 yr by melbournebudgies
June 21, 200817 yr Author thanks for that. $10 a kg sounds really cheap! and if he supplies it to the sanctuary it must be good stuff. what suburb is he in? i am typying with 1 hand because Nitro is on my other hand dissecting a grape! He loves them! Fruit tingles is a cool name! i will have a look @ my local pet shops (there are 3!) and see what lorikeet mix they sell. My brother, Jake said thank you very much for putting the ad on Petlink!
