For Throwback - Feeding Regime

Featured Replies

I have been impressed by your responses to what I see as sensible management of your birds.

I was wondering if you would post your feeding regime.

Things such as:

1. Seed types/combinations

2. Breeding season

3. Non-breeding Season

4. In the breeding cage

Thanks.

To be honest Derek it's nothing special! And remember I have only got back into them since Xmas.

A lot of stuff I talk about is from past experance and not present.

Seed mix- I was using Trill, which I used to use, that or Golden cob. But I read a post on here bagging Trill ( Might have been from DAZ ) which made me go out and look a bit harder at what I was getting. I was surprised to find small seed and a lot of husks. So I changed to the local rural supplies budgie mix that everyone in the club etc uses. I'm not wrapped on it, one thing about trill it is always clean not dusty. I do add a bag of canary and sometimes a bag of small parrot mix. These are 25kg bags. I'm not a believer about percentages of this or that, really the birds eat what they want. Some like canary or millet or oats. it really there personal choice!

Breeding season- Again mate it's my first for 12 years. Some things that the birds of old liked these turn there nose up at. I give C.L.O in the seed for a week before breeding and after again for a week. Plenty of cuttle, mineral grit mix which I add charcoal to. I give them vitamins in there water at the start of the breeding, then just water when they have chicks. My soft food which my old birds used to love but some of this new crew aren't fussed on!?! is-:

Soaked oats for 24hrs changing the water 3 times in that time.

Grated carrot and a boiled egg with shell, millet meal which you get from the health shop, wholemeal bread crumbs again from the health food shop. and granulated bee pollen which I melt with boiling water and stir into the mix. It should be a crumbly mix consistency. I usually fill a ice cream container depending how many pairs have young. There are hundreds of soft food recipes out there each claiming to be the one. I got this one out of a old U.K budgie book. I have seen no reason to change.

I'm not big into soaking seed, mung beans and all that, only because I'm lazy! Again people go on about protein, I do think people pump the birds too much, this as I have said on other posts can give you big problems. Better to under supply than over supply I think!

Arrm what else??

Off breeding season I worm them twice a year. I did medicate this lot at the start because they are all new birds from a dozen or so studs. Some were crook with Mega some with pooey bums, some with beak mite, some with feather mite which I had to fix, They get a green mix that has spinach, parsley, and check weed. I have birds that actually tell me they want greens. They flap like crazy until I get to there cage.

In the breeding cage- They get seed mix, a container of oats, mineral grit mix. Birds with young get soft food once every second day. Green mix twice a week.

I think that's it!

You do get a feel for them after a while. It's hard to explain! I have been watching budgies since I was a kid.

I think what I'm trying to say is you have to find your own path. Take all the advice on board, but in the end make your own call!

Don't be swayed by what we used to call FAD-FEDDERS guys that change there regime at a drop of a hat because so n so does this or that.

There is no magic formula!

Most of all the birds love routine!!

Good luck and Good breeding!

Thanks for that. Yes everyone has something different to offer and at the end of the day I will most likely go my own way after taking in all the advice I can.

Derek

There is stuff I have forgotten, like heaps of mixed millets and millet sprays.

my wet mix is made up of

large parrot mix seed soaked for 24 hours , washed well after soaked

carrot

broccolli

silverbeet

parsley

hard boiled egg

tin corn

bread crumbs

mixed together with bread crumbs and e-powder and only leave in the flights and breeding cages for 3-5 hours mainly feed them in afternoons and then the my chooks get the rest

my birds go wild over this mix and look forward to it every day

Pretty simular.

Silverbeet or spinach they get twice a week with parsley. tick.gif

Breadcrumbs, I use wholemeal, but whatever tick.gif

Broccolli, my birds have never been fused on? Don't know why? I have seen other breeders who's birds love it.

Tin corn, I have given my bird corn on the cob, Raw. But not tin stuff. Probably a bit sweeter may be has some added sugar?

As I said there are a lot of soft food recipes out there!

Some very basic, some with some weird and wonderfull stuff in them!

you are right there are a lot of diff wet mixs around , i was told if you start your birds on every thing and thay will eat it , and will feed there youngs one on it too, i use corn cobs too , but only when i grow it my self and freeze down , I would not buy any thing from shops as you dont know what is has been sprayed with , i only feed the things out of my garden to the birds (safety first ) :D and happy birdsbreeding season for me in Tasmaina is from first week August throught end December (to hot for breeding) then end Febuary till May while not breeding a full cleanning program flights breeding room , painting and all the things nead replacing or up grades ** this year i am planning to breed from August right through end of may ** :D due to some changes i have done to my breeding room to cool it down and added a few things to it , tested it out last year and dropped temp down 5c to 10 c while it is 25c plus out side i have the breeding room as cool as 20c to 23c
