Posted June 16, 200816 yr okay. I have a baby which is 4 weeks old and it fledged today. I was watching it make it around the aviary when its dad landed on the branch next to it. I thought he was going to feed him but instead he proceeded to put his leg on its back and try and do the dirty with it!!! I went in and stopped him because the baby was stressing. I put the bubs on my shoulder and then he landed on my shoulder and tried doing it again!!! so my question is .......do I remove the three babies even though they are only 4 weeks old? at what age can they stop being fed by the parents? self edit please check your posts before submitting for punctuation and typos. June 16, 200816 yr Is mum feeding them? If she is maybe you could get rid of dad and just keep an eye on things. Otherwise you might need to bring the babies in and watch them VERY closely and be ready to supplementary feed if necessary.
June 16, 200816 yr this behavior is quite common - the dad's mistaken the begging for food as an invite to mate When this happens i remove the male and leave then hen to wean the chicks
June 16, 200816 yr Author I removed the babies but did not remove the mother as she was not feeding them and is a bit fiesty and i worry that if i take her away from her partner she might attack the babies i am quite happy to formula feed them from now on as i would much rather that than for something bad to happen to them.
June 17, 200816 yr Sorry i didnt realise we were back in primary school so did i fail? You probably had marks taken off for being CHeeKY ! So off to the corner for you young lady, until you can learn to respect the forum's Morality Police. Go on ... off you go. AND no mumbling under your breath ... that will get you a longer time out & a bigger notice ! Cheeky Monkey !
June 20, 200816 yr Author I have pulled all three babies out of the aviary as dad was trying to "do" them all. I have put some seed ,egg and biscuit and water on the bottom of the cage they are 30 days old will they be okay by themselves? Is there anything that they would be missing out on by being away from the parents? They havent really got the hang of the fruit and veg yet.
June 20, 200816 yr I would just run your finger over their crop a couple of times a day to make sure they are filling it, that will let you know if they need extra feeds beforethey start to obviously loose weight. I find that if I put a few celery leaves in the seed bowl my babies will almost always chew on those even if they won't eat anything else.
