June 14, 200816 yr A lot of show breeders use doxy in this way. Its put through the birds on a 6 week course once a year.
June 14, 200816 yr Yes I use it and have found it to help with the breeding season. I use it once yearly as a lead up to the breeding season , which for me is December and Janurary , you must be careful with it and you must watch your birds closely as the drug can have the opposite affect on healthy birds. I mean healthy birds on doxy will become fluffed up ands suppressed, green droppings will appear , I then move these birds to another section and put them onto a course of vitiman and minerals and prep for breeding. The birds that actually improve , that is become more active , noisy and alert , droppings become tight and the feather also are birds that are carring some desiese, you must continue with the medication until signs of the sick birds emerge and than you can take them off the drug and onto the vitiman and minerals. This is why I say you must watch your birds and follow them through the medication for it to be used wisely. If you have no problems with breeding then I would not use it just for the sake of it. I give all bought birds a course in the quarintine period before they enter the avairy.

June 15, 200816 yr I'm going mad, I just checked and mine is tetracycline, how different is that? This is the older type drug , the oxytetracyclines will do a similar job but the 10% doxycycline doesent have the side-effects that the older drugs have . Its an S4 drug and you will only get it by perscription from at vet. June 15, 200816 yr yes cut around the vent of cocks and hens , had a very poor breeding season last year 56 babys for the year over 130 plus clear eggs Sounds like some probs there, The doxy might help , I had a friend that had clear eggs and he used Vetafarm Moulting aid during the moult and the led up to the breeding season with huge improvements .
June 16, 200816 yr yes cut around the vent of cocks and hens , had a very poor breeding season last year 56 babys for the year over 130 plus clear eggs Apart from the usual reasons for clear eggs..... age of birds any residual medications causing sterility also to be looked at is the stability of the mating perches. A loose or wobbly perch also creates clear egg issues.
June 16, 200816 yr Drugging a bird into breeding condition never replaces good sound management , good clean food, and a complete diet. Meds for Meds sake is a bad habit to fall into! Natural is a lot better, chickweed helps fertility. When a birds ready you know. Run your finger down either side of the vent of the cock bird, if it feels a little plump there's a good chance he is ready to go. If it feels bonny then he is probably empty and you will need to wait. There is a cycle the cocks go through. I've gotta stop giving away all the secrets!!
June 16, 200816 yr Wow that's interesting TB! Is that a good way to check whether young first time cocks are gonna be up to the deed too?
June 16, 200816 yr Wow that's interesting TB! Is that a good way to check whether young first time cocks are gonna be up to the deed too? Make sure he is in condition first! all the basic signs. This is part of A.I in which you gently squeeze the area to extract sperm. But please don't go around squeezing your male budgies!!! A.I requires guidance and practice, plus the right equipment. There are tiny bones that can be easily broken. But running your finger as I described will let you know if there is any thing there or not. Without too much discomfort to the budgie. Again letting out more secrets!! Edited June 16, 200816 yr by throwback
June 16, 200816 yr But please don't go around squeezing your male budgies!!! LOL can I still give them squeezing hugs? I have done AI in Horses and Cows before and have seen the issues that come from rushing a stallion or a bull into breeding not pretty. I think sometimes the less people know or think they know the better!
June 16, 200816 yr No worries TB, I sex alot of my own(non-budgie) birds by feeling the pelvic bones so I can do it gently
June 24, 200816 yr Author after 10 days on detox the birds are making more noise than ever , the bird room is very loud , i would not dare to let a cock loss in with the hens i am doing it for 30 days on detox then straight into my breeding program, i was on the phone to another breeder and he has 8 out 8 full eggs after detox he had the pair up 3 time before and nothing happen , thing are looking good if this is going to happen to me too
June 24, 200816 yr I’m with TB natural is best, the more you feed antibiotics when birds are not really sick, the sooner you build up immunity in the bacteria & then the antibiotics are useless when they are really needed. This immunity of bacteria can spread to humans also.
