June 14, 200816 yr When you fill the hole try smashing some glass in the concrete mix , it will slow them down. I use baits , its always in the walk ways and under the cabinets , I change brands and have never had a prob with birds dying from using the baits. On thing though I never have rats and mice at the same time , its one or the other.

On thing though I never have rats and mice at the same time , its one or the other. I have been told about the smashed glass and think its a very good idea. Being a leadlighter/stained glass worker has its fringe benefits...tons of spare broken glass to use Rats are rare here, thank goodness, but at times they are on the move due to wet weather. Once my new birdroom is usable it should not get any rodents in it. Cross fingers. I am tiling the floor through the week and making the doors to the flights, so I anticipate fully enclosed by mid to late week next week. Then I move all breeding cages in there until I fit it out with cabinets, benchtop and sink etc. I change bait brands on a regular basis too..seems to work better that way.
June 14, 200816 yr Kaz, I just saw this. I am so sorry to hear about it. I had rat problems early last year and the trap seemed to sort them out.... But??? sorry here about your rat probs here is a good tip put some steel wool in hole and use expanding form fill in the gap the rat will not eat through the steel wool and put some Eucalyptus oil (cap full) and water in a bowl (fish tin ) on top of your breeding unit and rat and mice will not come into your aviary as thay dont like the smell and it make you bird room smell good too Dave told be about getting a small sponge and adding a bit of Eucalyptus to stop Bugs getting into the seed. I glued a bit on the top of the holding bins. I mix this seed together for the birds, you can smell the Eucalyptus. .... since then I haven't seen or caught any rats. Last year I caught 9 rats in three weeks. I didn't think about the Eucalyptus until now.. It could have helped keep them away.. The tray stays set but has been emptied for over a year. Might be worth a try. .... oh and the birds don't mind the smell or taste at all.
June 15, 200816 yr Author Kaz Did you catch the blighter last night ???? No, Derek. I am hoping that having discovered its entry point and blocking it off, it will have no more access to the breeding room. Nothing stopping it digging into the aviary though. Maybe my dogs found it and ate it. I hope so.
June 15, 200816 yr On thing though I never have rats and mice at the same time , its one or the other. Thats because rats will hunt and eat mice so when there are rats around thay tend to scare the mice away and the mice will only return when there are no rats Edited June 15, 200816 yr by KAZ typo
June 15, 200816 yr Maybe my dogs found it and ate it. I hope so. I hope so too these vermin have no place here in Australia Edited June 15, 200816 yr by **Liv**
June 15, 200816 yr Author Apparently rats prefer the higher priced elite budgies too Throwback...those seem to be their rights here.
June 15, 200816 yr Someone needs to tell the rats that budgies have rights! Be careful that your dogs don't grab a rat that has eaten poison!
June 15, 200816 yr Author Someone needs to tell the rats that budgies have rights! Be careful that your dogs don't grab a rat that has eaten poison! Thats why we dont use poison.
June 15, 200816 yr i've been using poison for mine, my dogs won't eat dead whole animals though, that and my dogs are inside dogs during winter also
June 15, 200816 yr I don't use it either for that reason I'm going to try a 50:50 mix of cement and icing suger that someone reccomended to me
June 15, 200816 yr Author I don't use it either for that reason I'm going to try a 50:50 mix of cement and icing suger that someone reccomended to me Some people have said that rats can eat through cement. So, if thats true then cement and icing sugar would be like serving a rat some chocolate mousse for desert
June 15, 200816 yr Yes but if you give it to them when it hasn't been mixed with water and set it sets in ther stomach and kills them
June 15, 200816 yr That sounds like a horrible painful way to :S No offence, since poison is not much better, but that seems like it would be a slower process...
June 15, 200816 yr Author Yes but if you give it to them when it hasn't been mixed with water and set it sets in ther stomach and kills them Sorry, I am very sceptical about that little rat killing solution. Would have to see proof of that one.
June 15, 200816 yr I haven't tried it yet as I haven't had a rodent problem here, a bloke I know swears by it in his chook shed. Apparently the icing sugar makes it like lollies for them and they love it, the cement sucks the water out of them from the inside :ewww:I personally doubt it would be any slower than poison, I have had a pet rat accidentally poisoned (don't ask...) and despite our best afforts she died two days later, it is definately not quick and painless
June 15, 200816 yr http://www.wildlife.pro/kill-eliminate-rats.html Incredible Cunning. Another way to kill rats is to return to the old poisons. With an almost incredible cunning, though, some rats have learned to let one member of the pack taste the bait. If he dies immediately, the food is ignored. Some good reading Edited June 15, 200816 yr by throwback
June 15, 200816 yr That sounds like a horrible painful way to :SNo offence, since poison is not much better, but that seems like it would be a slower process... I'm with you *libby* too cruel!
June 15, 200816 yr Those of you who felt it was cruel do you use regular rat poison? Personally I steer clear of any method if I can get away with it, I don't even have traps out here, like I said though regular poison is not particularly humane... Edited June 15, 200816 yr by melbournebudgies
June 15, 200816 yr I agree rat poison isn't humane, I stated that already also, it does however seem more humane than slowly blocking up their digestive system and rendering them incapable of using any of those organs. The pain associated with that would be much more than poisoning. It would also be much slower. The poison shuts down the whole system, the cement would take a much longer time to take affect.
June 15, 200816 yr What do you do with them after you catch them Kaz? I have thought about using one of those but then I have a bunch of live critters to deal with!
