June 21, 200816 yr Don’t worry dogs eat lots worse things than freshly killed rats, if they are not supervised, they are real garbage guts. I used to have a team of miniature foxies, they were good at catching rats & mice, strange though they loved eating mice, but would never eat a rat for some reason. I’m glad your getting on top of them rats anyway Kaz, one way or the other, should be a bit quieter around there.

June 22, 200816 yr Large juvenile caught alive in the trap inside Ken's aviary overnight. Trap has been reset. Rat has been drowned. YEAH!!! How many more do you think are left????
June 22, 200816 yr I'm soo too much of a wimp to deal with euthinasing an animal probably why I use ratsak, out of sight out of mind :S I don't see the dead animals, or know if they're dead...
June 22, 200816 yr Author Large juvenile caught alive in the trap inside Ken's aviary overnight. Trap has been reset. Rat has been drowned. YEAH!!! How many more do you think are left???? There's no actual evidence of more, but I assume there has to be as there was a mum and dad and one large juvenile caught, so I would assume the rest of the juveniles from that family and they may have even bred some of their own by now. I am going to suggest to my husband he start concreting his aviary floor. He likes the natural look. But if he was to dig down and remove soil, place a layer of smashed glass down first and then about 3-4 inches of concrete..when its dry, he can then set woodchips or gravel over top and he can do it in sections until its all covered. He can work with the birds in there and cover each section as he goes until it dries.
June 22, 200816 yr It would be a more peaceful existence Kaz, as they will never give up, they are a constant menace & in suburbia you can have neighbours complain that you are attracting rats & mice & then that really complicates your problems.

June 25, 200816 yr Author What's the latest on your rat situation Kaz? How are your birds faring? I moved all birds out of the main aviary until we win over the rat issue. They are in smaller metal aviaries for now. I will cull while I have the chance and then I can put some birds in flight cages in the new birdroom. The rats have moved into Kens aviary for now.
June 25, 200816 yr The rats have moved into Kens aviary for now. Oh no! I hope they aren't getting his birds
June 30, 200816 yr Author The rats are getting into Kens aviary again. They are in tunnels under the floor. One new hole and a trap didnt catch anything. Today I saw two new holes. Ken caught and killed a large female rat this afternoon as it was hiding behind a section of wood. It had chewed a hollow behind the wood so it had somewhere to lay in wait.
June 30, 200816 yr That is what happened with mine Kaz, it chew thru the wood raised flooring and it under it .... .... Gosh I hope you get 'em ... even if you can only catch the females !!!! at least it will stop the breeding for the time being ..... Thoughts with you mate on this one ..... I know what you are going thru

July 25, 200816 yr Author Another rat found and dispatched. I saw a tunnel in my old birdroom area ( still four pairs in there in breeding cabinets ). The tunnel dug into the breeding room. So I took the dogs in there and they found the rat was still in residence behind a breeding cabinet. Dogs chased, rat ran up the wall and Ken chopped it with a shovel. It dropped still alive and the dogs got it Had to take it off them as the rat would have had poison possibly and the dogs were rewarded with some cooked sausages. Dead rat...large female. July 25, 200816 yr We had one found yesterday also We've had no signs of them until yesterday midday, we heard a horrible thud and bumping aorund on the back patio and looked up through the semi-clear sheeting, to see a cat and a rat shadow... Bob ran up there and took the rat off the PREGNANT cat (delilah) The rat was clearly poisoned going on his behaviour,... He was just sitting in the gutter and had exposed itself during the middle of the day aswell as looking like **** and sleepy :S The cat had hurt his leg but we didn't want to deal with him because we could see he was already halfway out, so Bob took it to the park into a tree to pass away, the poor thing just lay it's head down and waited
