Remember how I said I was colony breeding a while back, but was going to try cabinets and breeding cages? Well, I won a breeding cage on Ebay, I don't have that yet, but today I went down to the aviary, and was THRILLED to see that 2 of my budgie hens had laid an egg each, and so had mum's lovebirds(lovebirds seperate)! One pair of budgies is a colour that I think is called Slate Blue? And they are both opalines, so will be beautiful babies. The other pair, is a english/aussie cross grey green normal cock, and a blue and green mottled hen opaline with a yellow head. What will the results be? How long will it be before I get baby budgies? And baby lovebirds? How many eggs do you think they will lay? I'm SO excited!

Thanks,

Sam

incubation period for budgies is roughly 18 days, sometimes a little less or usually at this time of the year you'll find it to be a little more.

Lovebirds are 22 - 23 days, which may also fluctuate.

By slate you probably mean Mauve as slates are VERY rare.

Not sure, they might be mauves but what I've seen on Google images they are slates I think and they are Opalines too. Have you got a photo of a slate?

Thanks,

Sam

There are many shades of mauve and I also have had some very dark ones...bordering on what I would call a steel blue colour.
