Clipping Toenails ~~

hey i was wondering if it is necessary to clip my birds toenails, if yes how often???

should i get a vet to do it if so, or is it easy..

please update me with this one

I have never ever clipped a budgies toenails and I have had hundreds and hundreds of budgies. Generally once you start you keep having to do it in my experience. If there is excessive growth it is usually indicative of a health issue causing the accellerated growth. Do you have natural branches for perches or just dowels ?

i have natural perches, i gathered in my local park.

By The Way: is it good to change the arrangement of perches every so often eg. once a year or something..i havent changed mine and ive had him for just over a year

Just be careful with branches from a park. They may have been sprayed or treated with something. Be sure to give them a good clean. It's also a good idea to change the cage around often... every month or so. This will avoid bordem etc... When I had an inside budgie, his cage got changed around when it wash given a good clean out.

Thanks, il change it around these holidays :-),

I wouldn't unless they were really overgrown, Our IRN had sharp nails and we took him to the vet to get it done 4 weeks ago and they are now longer and sharper than they were before. Have to go again now... Budgies are pretty good and do not get too sharp. I agree with KAZ, I use jacaranda branches and dowel in mine and they seem to be pretty good. If you really want to get them done go to the vet as they can bleed pretty easily. We will be getting taught how to do it next time hopefully - and were really confidant in out vet's abilitys he's a specilist in bird medicine.

But I don't think I'll ever need to do it to any of my budgies- well I hope not...

I've never clipped nails, never had to either, branches should be changed for frequently then a year - I do mine every 2 months as my gnaw at them and pull them apart, not to mention some get dirtier then others too - Do be careful with naturaul perches/ branches even from your own yard should be washed ( i got red mite problems) so i learnt the hard way

I have scooter who has rickets and needs his nails cut every couple of months. I use baby nail cutters and just take off the tip, just have to be careful not to get the vein ;)
