June 14, 200816 yr Sorry for your loss Neat. Sometimes I just think they are not meant to be (like my one who didn't get out of the shell). I guess it's like survival of the fittest. It's still not nice when they don't make it, but maybe for the best. Your other three look very well looked after.
June 14, 200816 yr Isnt that horrible when that happens they go through all the effort of getting out of the shell and seem to be doing fine and then for some unknown reason they just die i feel your pain! i had one die after 1 day a few weeks ago and it is very upsetting im sure you will have alot of healthy babies coming up shortly anyway so goodluck with them mate-y-o
June 14, 200816 yr Neat are you feeding the parents on some good protein? If not Boil an egg for 20 minutes, cool, grind up the shell and place in a warm (100degC) oven for 1/2 hour to dry out. Add with some spinach leaves, parsley, carrot, beetroot to a blender. Add the dried out shell and brend till a rough texture not too fine. If you have some Calcivet, add 5ml per cup and give about 1/8 cup per day per pair. I add a small amount of hulled oats, just to get them interested. This will give them Protien, Vitamins, Calcium and minerals. Good for growing chicks.
June 15, 200816 yr Fresh beetroot not tinned!! Looking forward to seeing them feather up, they should be pretty.
June 15, 200816 yr why boil it for 20 minutes Daz? I've become lazy with the eggs I mix into my fresh foods for the birds and now throw it into the bottom of a coffee cup so it cracks and breaks the yolk, swirl it around for 10 second, so it all mixes and then Nuke it in the microwave for a minute. When it comes out it's "hard boiled" I think chop it all up including the shell into fine pieces and add it to the green mix.
June 15, 200816 yr I microwave my eggshells for thirty seconds or until they just start to go brittle then chuck them in my mortar and pestle, if I have lots of shells I put them in the blender and turn them into dust.
June 15, 200816 yr I won't feed shells anymore unless the birds can chose to eat them. I had a chicks crop block due to sand grain sized egg shell which it was fed...

June 16, 200816 yr Heya, I went out this morning, ( before tj went to netball) to take pics, and the No3 baby was dead underneath the other babies..... Yes! I did the whole breath thing with it, to no avail it was warm but lifeless ( or shriveld and flat) But I didn't have hopes for this one yesterday... As when it hatched, it was alot paler then the others. This is a usual sign it of something wrong either illness or not ment to be ( however I think i remember reading here that a members paler one survived?) - But on the possamistic side of things ( hehe BB) there are 3 healthy looking babies in there. As well as in the other nest there are 5 healthy looking babies too with lots of colors ... I will have to recharge the camera as i got to take one picture then the batteries died ..... Hey Neat, I was the one with the Paler one who survived. This was little Pale Ale And this is her now - Gabriel She was not expected to survive. I lost 4 pale ones, all from another nest box, but her survival was a miracle, thus the religious based name.
June 17, 200816 yr Author Ahhh Dave, I couldn't remember.... She looks awesome !!! Yeah I didn't expect it to survive, however No 5 & 6 are here and the others are going to be Blues WHOOO HOOOO they are darkening up nicely
