Well this turned into something very interesting for me.

I decided to contact Gerald Binks himself about getting a copy of the book. We ended up trading some very informative emails. He no longer sells to Australia as he has given BirdKeeper Magazine the rights to sell here.

He is a very lovely man and ever so full of friendly advice. I would love to travel to the UK one day to meet him.

For those of you who already have a copy of The Challenge here is an extract from one of the emails he sent me:

Enjoy The Challenge---but read and absorb the chapters on feeding above all the juicy chapters. Most fanciers cut the corner on these feeding chapters and if you cannot breed birds it is these chapters that get you out of jail. Believe me.

Now there is some great advice from one of the worlds best.

I have a signed copy of his book on order.

Not only is Gerald Binks a very clever and intelligent budgerigar breeder, he is a very approachable man and welcomes contact. I found that when I got my book from him too :)

I have recently purchased this book and have read it several times over now and am still reading it, there is alot of great information to take in. There are several things in the feeding thing that I find quiet interesting, like the feeding of milk soaked bread! The other one is one that seems to be of great debate in many clubs and between many different breeders, and that is the availability of GRIT. How many people here suppy grit for their birds?

And considering that the Australian feeding management part was contributed by Henry George, I am thinking that it has to be a great formula!!

Hi,

Thought I'd ask a question in this post as it is relevant, I've just managed to order a book from the net titled: Best in show, breeding and exhibiting budgerigars published 1974 by Gerald Binks, just wondering if anyone knows if this is the same book as The Challenge (I was kind of thinking that the secondhand dealer may have entered a sub-title instead of the correct title)

Anyway reguardless I'm sure any book written by Gerald Binks will be of great benefit to me.

Its not the same book. Its a much earlier book than the Challenge. The Challenge is now into its second version. The Best in Show was well before it. The Challenge is a HUGE book with amazing info. The Best in Show book is a normal sized book. Has good info, but most of it would be outdated by the Challenge.

Doh!

Oh well, it will still be an interesting read I'm sure, and I thought I had a bargin  . I will still do my best to obtain a copy of the challenge. Even if it is through the the Birdkeeper magazine.
