Posted June 9, 200817 yr Dominants can carry the recessive gene for years and only making their apparence known when mated to a suitable mate - In another words the recessive gene will only be visual if pair to another which is either split to a recessive gene or is a recessive gene Edited June 9, 200817 yr by KAZ dominates to dominant ...spelling
June 9, 200817 yr Recessive genes are extremely hard to get rid of out of a stud as you never know where they are & like you say can be hidden for ages. Even if you know a Recessive trait is in a bird once it mates with a bird without it only about something like 25% of the young will carry it, but if you don’t mate them with a bird with that trait you don’t know where it goes after that & later down the line you get a surprise chick. Recessive Pied is a good example these days lots of birds carry this trait.
June 9, 200817 yr Recessive Pied is a good example these days lots of birds carry this trait. If only that were all my birds I have only ever produced 3, by accident! lol which are all split fallow so will be used for that gene instead
June 9, 200817 yr In humans eye colour blue/brown is like this. One of our kids has blues which we felt was impossible since as far as we new all my partners family had brown eyes. When we started tracing the genes it turns out that on my other halfs side they have come down four generations in brown eyed people to turn up randomly in one of our kids!
