Need Help Asap...

I have a pair of budgies, the female laid four eggs two week ago and then i realised after one week that three eggs were broken inside the nest. One week after I looked back in, there were three eggs again and today two more eggs are broked and they were on ground of the cage. Male keep going inside the nest (when female is out of the nest eating) and breaking the eggs. when eggs are bit broken/cracked and female is sitting on them, they get stuck to her fether and when she comes out these eggs come with her and falling on the floor. I need help, can some one tell me what to do.

I's suggest taking the nest box out... She's obviously not a hen you'd want to breed with as she tromples her eggs and if it's not removed she'll lay until she kills herself.

Welcome By The Way :)

I would remove the male personally, she will most likely lay again and the eggs should be fertile (they can store the males sperm for a couple of weeks) and let her raise them on her own. If she has lots of babies you might need to help her with the feeding but up to four she should be okay. With him in there you won't get any babies at all at this rate. Also make sure that the eggs are not simply thin from lack of calcium, she may be breaking them with her weight if they aren't very strong.

It's generally the hens that break the eggs when they're unsettled on the nests and get disrupted too often.

Hens won't look after babies well by themselves. They barely leave the nest box to eat so the babies can starve and more often than not without a cock will abandom eggs and chicks.

Well yes, my statement assumes you are positive that it is the male causing the problem and not the hen, which as Libby says is more likely.

definately make sure there is a source of calcium for the hen , she may be lacking and eating the eggs herself.

How old are the budgies you are trying to breed with ? Sounds very much to me like the actions of an immature pair of budgies...budgies too young to breed. Also, it is the responsibility of a breeder to check the nestbox daily while eggs and twice daily while there are chicks hatching.

I would remove the nestbox and take the time to learn about breeding through our FAQ section and by asking questions on here. Sounds like you need some research and facts before you go much further into trying to breed.

I also might make a point that if the eggs are being kicked out of the nest that's very much so a hen thing to do.

i would put a couple cool mint in the nesting box as thay are harder and this will keep the hen up of the eggs and will help stop breaking and also put small amout pine shaving (untreated pine ) in the nesting box to help the eggs moving around

gday there iv had this problem to many times but thing that will stop them is cool mints. i wouldnt say that its the cock is smashing the eggs its more likly to be the hens. The hens will be able to tell if the eggs are fertile but if they have been sitting on the eggs for 1-2 weeks and not one egg is fertile then often the hen will kick the eggs out. hope that will help you?.

cheeres mc1. :)

Thanks for your help. What is that Cool mints stuff. Where can I buy this cool mints?

Cool mints are a sweet from Allens you can buy. It seems a little odd though as with the birds body heat and perspiration that would make everything all sticky and so on... When adding things to the nest as fakes people tend to lean more towards marbles that're white.

White marbles or small smooth white pebbes would be my recomendation. I always stick them in my pocket to warm them up before adding them to the nest if there are other eggs in there already

Totally agree with removing the Nestbox and eggs, as well as giving a calcium supplement to the hen - sounds like a young hen to me, or it mayinfact be an OLD one as I have hear of this happening to a friend of mine ......

Best bet is to stop the breeding - if need me use fake eggs, marbles, pebbles so the hen then if infact will sit won't hatch anything and will be bored of it - can you post a picture of the couple ????
