Posted June 8, 200817 yr Can you tell me a bit about your bird (temperament, noise level, etc), I know a couple of members have them I have been offered some two-three week old babies for me to hand rear in a little while and I am just considering whether to go ahead with it. Can you tell me also what you paid for your bird(if you don't mind) as I'm trying to work out if it's a good price. He is offering me $150 for green and $200 for blue. Thanks guys
June 8, 200817 yr Price of hand reared quakers is about $350 - $400 here in SA so you have been given a good price. I looked into buying one myself,- they are lovable and affectionate, but can have many behavioral problems. They need a LOT of attention and get possessive of their carer and can attack/bite other people etc. My niece has one and she is starting to have problems with him.
June 8, 200817 yr Author I have similiar problems with my lorikeet, for that reason I have resolved to always handrear in pairs or more so that they bond to their birdy friend as well as their owner, I find it reduces those problems.I guess I am thinking that since I am the one putting in the work I should expect to pay about what you would pay for an aviary bird that wasn't hand reared (since I am not paying for the breeders rearing time), does that make sense?
June 8, 200817 yr Average price for fully weaned quakers is $150-$200 for green and $200-$250 for blues. If they are only 3 weeks old then they are not really worth more than $100 each. Parrot forums are the best place to ask about temperament, I know heaps of members of parrot forums with quakers.
June 9, 200817 yr Those are prices for handraised. I also saw yesterday a breeding pair of blues for sale for $450 (aviary breeders). When I had my pair I'd bought them as an experienced pair for $300 (aviary breeders). June 9, 200817 yr Author That's a great price BC, you would be hardpressed to buy them for that price in Melbourne. The guy isn't budging o the price so I'll have to think about it. Thanks
June 9, 200817 yr Hand raised quakers/pet quakers tend to not be as noisey as aviary birds. They mimic a lot of words and noises, so they spend a lot of time "talking". Saffy has a screech every so often, but the noise factor of a quaker is MUCH less than my sun, or a sulphie or even a galah I would think. She is a darling, with loads of personality and as with most birds, very intelligent. (I just stretched and I usually make a noise after I stretch......she now imitates that and whenever she sees me stretch makes the "noise" before I do! ) I have been advised by a bird dealer who sells quakers that they are a great parrot as they dont require as much attention as some and are a hardy bird. Saffy lives with my sun, so she has a constant companion, but even prior to that, as long as she had lots of toys (which she does) she is quite happy to amuse herself in her cage, although they really do love people company. I would recommend a quaker as a pet over a sun conure, they are much quieter and much less demanding I got Saffy at 10 weeks of age and have had her for just over a year now and have never regretted a minute
