Severed Toe

Featured Replies

My little hen has a partly severed toe, I have brought her inside in a cage and put a little flower on it to stop the bleeding which was slow. She seems fine, but I am going to keep and eye one her just to make sure. The toe is on an angle and I'm not sure what to do about it? Will it heal itself or fall off? It is cut just above the nail on the soft part of her foot, and not cul all the way through but the nail part now hangs to the side a bit, and it is only hanging by a thread.

Oh Dear!!

Just put some savlon cream on it. She'll be right! The little bit will probably fall off if there is on circulation going through it.

Throwback is right, don't panic as he says the end will proable be lost, but it should recover completely. Just keep her quite as you are that's about all you can do. I have had birds loose all their foot & completely recover.

The only thing i would be worried about now that the bleeding has stopped is the risk of infection. I had a budgie lose all but one of her toes to another hen during breeding season (everyone was feeling a bit feisty it seems) and not knowing any better i didn't do anything. The toes healed up and she happily bossed all the other budgies around for another couple of years before passing away.

Just make sure you keep all her perches, etc very clean while she recovers to minimise the risk of infection, as TB said a little Savlon, just watch she isn't chewing it or anything
