Numbering Eggs

For those that number their eggs, what do you use to do it? Is a greylead pencil okay?

I have never done it myself but have read here that some people use a black marker, not sure about pencil, I'm sure someone here will give you good advice about numbering eggs.

I'm sure I read somewhere not to use black marker as the eggs are porous?

Eggs do have tiny miniscule pores, using a form of non-toxic marker will be fine

Pencils you're probably going to puncture it... find a non toxic texta :D

I've used a pencil before and the heat from the Hen to the eggs wore it off so i had no idea of what was what ...

I have also pushed a bit too hard and damaged one too, *wishes she knew of a 6B pencil then ...

I now ( when I remember to ) use a kids texta ( all kids stationery is non toxic as you are right the eggs have little thingys on them that absorbs this is why it is important to wash hands before we touch the egg with a light soap or just warm water ( ESPECIALLY SMOKERS OUT THERE ..... I kinda learnt that the hard way too)

I use a water based non toxic marker. The kind for kids to use. They will put anything in there mouths.

I dont mark eggs. Never have and never will :budgiedance:

PS Whatever will be will be.

I have only marked eggs when being fosters so I know who's is who's

I only find it handy just to know whether eggs are passed their due date and when to expect which to hatch Handy to know if you suddenly get a four day break between babies which one was supposed to be in the middle and didnt make it.

Yeah, that half makes sense... I just write them down on a piece of paper, if it doesn't hatch then it doesn't phase me which egg was actually due

I just work on the theory that if there are six eggs in there for a total of twelve days apart. If the first egg still hasn't hatched after day six or seven I can pretty well discard it (as long as I know my hen started sitting straight away of course) rather than waiting until it is fourteen or fifteen days past its due date.

LOL, I am over the marking of eggs too

i just wait now, and if it's been a week since the last hatched it is no good ....

I dont mark eggs. Never have and never will

PS Whatever will be will be.

Sounds like an eggceptionally good idea. snicker.gif

What is a "dag". should i be flattered?

:) A Dag is a foolish goof off kind of person, someone funny or quirky, but lovable at the same time. A dag is also the poop that hangs off the back end of s sheeps bum. :)

My budgies never ever had more than ten eggs so I could never see the sense in numbering them as I could easily count them using my fingers. laughing.gif
