June 8, 200816 yr although for my "showier birds" who have a shorter breeding life Sorry but why should they have a shorter breeding time frame over the 'pet' type birds? The stress of breeding affects them all and retirement is needed for all birds.
June 8, 200816 yr I too find that i have a quicker result with bonded birds who have picked their mates themselves
June 8, 200816 yr Most Budgies I find are very accommodating & will pair with what ever mate you choose for them, but I bought a nice show type Grey Green cock last year, I mated him with one of the hens I bought with him from the same breeder, but all eggs were infertile, since then I tried him with a couple of hens, but he would have nothing to do with them, in the aviary he just sat there without any interest in any one around, I just about thought he was going to be a failure, then a young hen not even moulted was in the aviary with him & all of a sudden he took a shine to her & has gone crazy & wont leave her side, I will let him breed with her when she is old enough. Of course whether it will succeed still has to be seen. I had another Pied hen I bought wouldn’t breed with anything, then she went back in the aviary & later a cock was placed in the aviary with her & she started pairing up with him, so I put them in a cabinet & they had two batches. So you get a few cases with very strict ideas on what & whom they like.

The main breeder i buy off (Brett Wood) sells mostly his older birds, between 2-4 years old, so basically when I get them there's not much time left before they aren't good for breeding and will be retired. If I want to eutalise their genes I have to do it quickly. My show birds I've bred myself though will have the same breeding life span as all my pet types obviously though.
