Flaking Beak

Featured Replies

It is me, crazy mother of budgie Boris again :D. Yesterday i asked a question about him vomiting/regurgitating and seems like it was regurgitating because today he seems happy and active however there is another issue i have noticed which worries me. He seems to have a flaky beak and it almost looks like he has a horizontal crack in the middle of it. Could you please look at the photo and tell me if it is normal or is it a sign of illness? Looks like his beak isn't right at all, what do you give him, food wise, do you give him supplements, cuttlebone, mineral blocks, are his perchers dowel or natural branches

I give him Xtra vital budgie food, it says it is complete food, consists of 26 seeds, egg, fruit and herbs. I give them fruit and herbs almost daily too. they have a big eucalyptus branch on top of their cage which they climb and nibble on. their perches are three wooden, one rope one and two plastic ones and they do have two cuttlebones in their cage too. Oh yes and i give them probiotic in water which was prescribed by an avian vet to his girlfriend as i bought her from the shop a couple of months ago and she said he will benefit from it too.

In the picture you can see some strange horizontal line, i just checked and it has gone, something must have stuck to it :D. but the rest is still there, it still looks flaky.

just took this picture without the horizontal line - http://s291.photobucket.com/albums/ll298/v...budgiebeak2.jpg

Thank you:) i try!:D

Only that horizontal line was something stuck-on but the rest does seem flaky. it has always been slightly flaky but it seems to get abit more severe.

It does look very flaky near the tip, doesn't it? One cause of excessive beak flaking is a vitamin deficiency. A mostly seed diet is deficient in about everything. I can't tell you if that is the issue for certain, but I would add fresh or cooked (raw is better) vegetables like carrots, kale, broccoli, etc. to the diet, as well as cooked grains. Don't worry overmuch if he ignores them at first, just keep offering them and eventually they will get nibbled on. Also look to the items in the cage - is there a particular toy he may pick at that could break off the tip of the beak, or does he pick at the bars any?

My galah's occasionally get that but it seems to disappear again just as mysteriously, I don't know what causes it because mine have good diets. You could try brushing a little edible oil on it like olive oil to help moisturise it a little, increase his vegies intake and that should give his beak a good chance to recover.

He does eat fruit and veg, he quite likes them. I will do the oil thing, thank you. His feet look dry too usually and i put some oil on them and they look better, so it maybe it will help his beak too.

Only just found this topic :budgiedance:

It's a birdy beak moult. Usually the birds will rub it off on a branch and so on to smooth it back over, he'll be fine... many birds get it e.g. cocky's, budgies, weero's any of the "parrot" species

It's just layers that are old peeling off to reveal the ever growing new stuff... If it didn't do it it would be thick all the way down how it's thick at the top as their beaks constanty grow.
