Reading the post about when to worm, reminded me about something I've wondered for a while. What products are the best to use for worming budgies and whats the best way to administer them?

I use the standard wormer that I can get from wherever(pet shop, bird merchant ect, no specific brand... depends on what they have in store)... I admister it to all aviary birds via water source and all cabinet birds via the beak and all other birds via beak also.

Do you mean you use an eye dropper (or similar) with the diluted wormer via their beak for the cabinet birds or do you put it directly into their crop??

I have just checked what I have in my cupboard. Interestingly I have two brands and they have different active ingredients. My preferred of the two is the one with Levamisole as the active ingredient which actually kills the worms and eggs. The other one has Piperazine which I was told once is not as strong and will actually only knock the worms out rather than killing them. They will get excreted when they are knocked out and generally subsequently die but it won't kill eggs that are excreted so you have to be really careful to clean the cage thouroughly the day after you worm them as they can reinfect themselves if they pick seed from the bottom of the cage and reingest the eggs.ust read further, Piperazine only treats roundworm whereas Levamisole treats all of the worms.

Worm-enda has Levamisole plus Praziquantel which is what that one is by the look of it Derek. So I would say it's pretty similiar, not many of the pet shops around here stock vetafarm and if they do they only stock the foods.

Oxfendazole and Praziquantel are the actives in Wormout Gel

My containers don't contain eye droppers, depending on the bird i'll either crop it of drip it from a syringe...

My two brands are Aristopet & elliotts

Aristopet contains piperazine citrate (controls round worm)

and the Elliotts contains levamisole hydrochloride (controls round worm and hair worm)

Elliots is one that can be administered by one drop to beak as well as using in the normal way in the water.

I use Moxidectin. active ingrediant is Moxidectin 2mg/ml

 

It's brilliant stuff. Very safe to use during breeding, moulting and times of stress.

It kills EVERYTHING that feeds off the birds body fluids - worms, mites, scaly face mites, leg mites etc

Also given via their drinking water or direct to crop 0.25ml per 400g body weight

I got it from my local bird dealer, Its around $40 - $50 for 125ml bottle, but worth every cent :sad:

CYDECTIN:

Add 5mls to a litre of water and dose for 5 days. Repeat 2 weeks later. Active ingredient Moxidectin, Sheep strength ONLY. Effective against roundworm, gizzard worm, scaly face and air-sac mites. A favourite wormer ESPECIALLY if the 'Red Wormer' is to be used as the follow-up wormer.
