Posted June 4, 200817 yr Hi All, It's been a while since my last post, but be assured that I have been keeping up to date with all the goings on...!! I was just wondering if it was possible to tell the difference between a normal and melanistic spangle in an adult bird? I have checked out all the pictures I can find, but it wasn't really clear. Thanks for your help. SJW
June 4, 200817 yr I don't know anything about them but here is an interesting read http://www.bcv.asn.au/Melanistic%20Spangle.pdf
June 4, 200817 yr Look at the tail ....... Daz has a post on here in the mutation page there is info there
June 4, 200817 yr Author I didn't see anything specific in there about tail differences, and the pictures all looked similar to me. I know the melanistic spangle has a light coloured tail, and all the pictures I could see of normal spangles all seemed to have light coloured tails as well, so I guess I'm just getting a little confused....
June 4, 200817 yr This is My Skyblue Spangle ............. This one is Dazza's melanistic Edited June 5, 200817 yr by KAZ
June 8, 200817 yr The tail is only a sign when young, this is when it is clear like a normal spanlge while the wings look normal, with mouting the wing patterns start to appear like a normal spangle. it would be hard to pick out a M. Spangle once grown from a normal. another m.spangle (after moulting)
June 8, 200817 yr SJW the tail is not how you pick them from a regular spangle but how you pick them from a normal bird. A normal bird will have a dark tail and normally patterned (dark) wings, a regular spangle will have a light tail and light wings and a melanistic spangle will have a light tail and dark wings. Make more sense
June 8, 200817 yr Heheh .... I knew there was a tail thing in there somewhere ..... Best Bet is to ask dazza, he has bred them
June 8, 200817 yr Melanistic spangle usually have full mask spots where the normal should be bullseye spots.
