It Is 1 Month We Have A Budgie...

Hello and sorry I didn`t introduce myself in the proper section before, I just do not have much of a free time.

My girlfriend and I bought a budgie, actually I did as a present for her. He (actually we found out it is more likely she after we did some research, but we keep talking about her as if she is a boy) was actually the most calm one they had on that market, didn`t even bite the shop assistant and he has been calm all the way home. Everything is still quite fine, about a week ago we took his mirror away as it seemed he is getting fixated on it and we think his behaviour towards us had improved since then, but still not very much. He is used that if he wants to go out of his cage, he needs to step on our finger or hand before we take him out, and the same on the way back in (only if we need to put him in for some reason (eg cooking), we don`t prevent him going back in if he wants to of course), but you can see on him that he does that only because he knows he will get out (which he wants). Sometimes it is easy to reach out and pet him, but sometimes he does peck us or is running away. Even sometimes when we put our hand in his cage, he starts to climb all around the "ceiling" of the cage and is obviously scared.

Is it still too soon to expect he would like us bit more than on the start? Thanks for any reply.

By the way, sorry for my English )

The problem is probably the mirror, since it has only been a week since you took that out I would give him a little more time. Try working out what his favorite food treats are(mine love celery tops) and only give those in your hand, bribery works wonders

Hi, welcome to the forum, your english is fine :D

since you just got your budgie it will take some time or him to get use to you all. what you are doing with him so far is good. if you keep on doing it, l'm sure you will bond nicely with your budgie.

do you have any pictures of your budgie, we all love to see each other's budgies

welcome,

Time is the key mate, like the others have said it will take some time .... A picture would be great to see ......

Hello and welcome,

Your budgie sounds completely normal and you have had some great advice so far.

Is your budgie a lone much during the day???

melbournebudgies: Yeah, that`s another problem, he doesn`t want to eat anything else than seeds and honey stick. He never takes anything out of our hands (except for proso, but he usually just peck it once and runs away), even when we put in separate bowl some fruit or veggies for him (we tried big variety), he doesn`t touch it

Liv: No, actually I am sitting 2 metres from his cage majority of the day as I am working on computer at home at the moment, I usually let him out and he sits on the top of his cage, ocassionally flies to the end of the room and back. Just every now and then I pet him little bit.

As I was reading this forum through, I saw budgies should be covered with the cloth for 10-12 hours and we didn`t know that, never done that before, now we tried overnight and he was furious and kept hovering on bottom of the cage where the cloth didn`t reach, peeking out :rip: . We need to buy a bigger one...

I have posted picture in picture topic by the way :o)

Here is your picture of Cookie

I still feel Cookie is completely normal! The fact that you are home with him/her all day also proves that there are no boredom issues. Cookie is just adjusting to being a pet.

Baby budgies are not automatically tame, and the fact that Cookie is as tame as he is already shows great progress. just keep up what you are doing and you will have a lovely playful and cheeky budgie :rip:

The only other thing to suggest is to have Cookies wings clipped again to remove the long flight feather that remains - his wings would be uncomfortable like they are and could be making him cranky

There is no reason you can't try with a little seed in your hand. Since you are sitting at the computer you could put a little dish of seed next to you on the desk and encourage him to sit up next to you. I have a little wooden 'playgym' that sits on the kitchen bench while I am doing stuff in the kitchen(not cooking though) ad I find that is great. Just keep persevering with the vegies, he'll get it eventually.

Awwww your Cookie is an adorable little baby. One suggestion I have for when I have been having birds out of their cages, parrots AND budgies is to move to another room with them, so they dont have the cage "security blanket" there. It makes them focus more on what is around them. Seeing as Cookies cage is where you work, maybe you could try covering it over with a sheet or blanket when he is out of the cage. Just a suggestion that has worked with some taming Ive done :)

Liv: We are thinking we will let his wings grow back completely, not clipping them again. The reason why those first...how to call it, maybe strips?... are there is, when the lady who sold me him clipped his wings, she said this is the way to do it, leave those first two or three strips be and cut just the rest, so I take it that is not true then? Yeah..thinking about it, she also told me that it is boy...

melbournebudgies: Trying all the time, if I try to bribe him with something in my hand, he just runs away as if he thought it is poisoned or so :hap: Nor does he touch anything else then seeds, but we will just keep trying.

Sunnie: I`ve just tried that, he was flying around a room a bit and then stoped in the middle of the room and is sleeping.. :D We will do it from now on, thanks :hap:

As well as thanks to everyone else for advices :hap:

Some breeders do it that way as it alows the wing to keep its nice long look. The "Strips" feathers are called primary flight feathers :hap:

Here is a topic all about wing clips - with pictures :hap: ---> HERE
